weegegirl 2 #1 June 6, 2006 I'm sure this has been talked about a LOT. So, feel free to call me an ass and point me to that thread. BUT.... what's currently the best digital still camera to jump with. I want to switch to digital even though the rest of my dz is still shooting 35mm. Driving me crazy not having copies of my pictures and spending 100 bucks at a time on film development.
vdschoor 0 #2 June 6, 2006 Get the Canon Digital Rebel XT... You can't go wrong there.. I got the 20D cause I do a lot of ground photography as well, and if you have bigger hands, the XT is not as nice to handle (I think) I wanted a slightly bigger, heavier camera. sdctlc 0 #3 June 6, 2006 gotta agree, XT has high frame rate, High resolution, light weight.. Not as many features as the 20D but a great all around camera for skydving Scott C."He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!"
Peej 0 #4 June 7, 2006 You ass! Just kidding Liz. As the other guys have said, the XT is the way to go. I started shooting with one a few months back and it rocks. I still use the standard lens and the pics look great, i will be getting a slightly wider one when i can afford it though. May i suggest you check out www.dbuys.com afaik their prices are some of the best. Cheers PJ Advertisio Rodriguez / Sky
sdctlc 0 #5 June 7, 2006 That is a good deal. Black and Silver body on XT with Lens (kit 18-55mm) free shipping for under $750 then the $100 rebate. Also checked B&H and they have a great deal going with the EOS Digital Rebel XT Digital Camera (Silver) with 18-55mm Lens & 1GB Ultra II CF Card including rebate for under $700 The kit lens will work! I jumped it for awhile and have since gone to the Sigma 15mm Scott C."He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!"
ChangoLanzao 0 #6 June 7, 2006 I use a Nikon D70s and I love it. I also do quite a bit of ground photography so its size and weight are justified for me. You'll probably get the most recommendations for the Cannon XT, and that's OK ... it's an excellent choice for freefall photography.

pilotdave 0 #8 June 7, 2006 I went and ordered a rebel xt last night. I shopped around and chose to buy at http://www.newegg.com. Looked at dbuys, but it specifically says "This item is not eligible for any rebate program." I don't understand why that is or exactly what that means, but it got me looking elsewhere. I assume the canon $100 rebate can still be used, but I wasn't sure. I did buy my PC1000 from dbuys and had no problem with their service. I bought a computer from newegg a while ago and was REALLY impressed, which is one of the big reasons I went with them. VERY good, fast service. Not the best price though. Also looked at amazon.com, which is competitive. Before rebate (with lens): Dbuys: $741 (free shipping) Amazon: $779 (free shipping) Newegg: $776 (+ shipping) B&H: $750 (+ shipping) Best Buy: $855 Dave

That, and the fact that Canon is quite a bit ahead in the digital world makes me want to stick to Canon.
 Peej 0 #11 June 8, 2006 Funnily enough, i ended up going with Amazon when i bought my camera. I had friend's who were in the US not so long ago and they offered to bring an XT back for me seeing as though prices in the US are so much cheaper than here. B&H had the best price i could find but their international ordering piloicies were so strict i had to go with Amazon Still, i'd reccomend them or dbuys in a heartbeat. Should be here for this weekend. What lenses do people use with that camera for tandems and whatnot? I was talking to a guy at my dz this weekend who uses the standard lens it comes with and says it works fine. The standard lens will work just fine with the camera, personally I am a huge fan of the Sigma 15mm, but you have to fork out another 400+ dollars for that lens. If you can't do that, you will be very happy with the standard lens (18-55) on your camera, it's a nice lens that will do the trick for you just fine.
 The111 1 #14 June 12, 2006 I use standard lens too. Results are fine. Many shots I've taken with it here and in June Parachutist. It is certainly good enough for tandems. I tape the zoom and focus rings down and use manual focus. It is a bit tricky to get the focus just right and if either ring slips at ALL under the tape you'll go out of focus. But I just double check every jump to make sure they haven't shifted. The lens gets best performance at widest end (18mm) which is probably where you'd use it anyway. I would like to try a "better" lens, but I'm trying to stop spending $ on new things.www.WingsuitPhotos.com
 Join the conversation You can post now and register later.
