Peak wingloading? (Samurai?)

Recommended Posts

So you get the most performance out of some canopies under specific wingloadings.

I currently fly a Stiletto 120 at a wingloading of 1.75 ish. I am told anything more than that and I will start loosing performance. I curently desire more performance. Badly.

I have demo'd Vengeance (97, 107, 120) - Anyone know the optimal wingloading for the most performance on this canopy? The smaller the canopy the faster I went but the more wing I had the longer the swoop... it seemed anyway. Also I keep hearing wicked awesome things 'bout the Samurai...

I demo'd a Velocity (111)... It was alright. Just so different from what I was used to. What's the peak wingloading for the Velocity?

I also borrowed an Icarus Extreme from a friend on day. An 84 or an 86? I can't remember. It too was alright but again soo different from what I used to. Peak wingloading?

Arrgggh, I am just too damned confused. I have become an aggresive pilot the right way and it's time to go another step. But anyone who knows Stiletto's knows they're pretty good all around canopies. Practical yet fast...

So what's the next step up? Without being too impractical... Cross braced airlocked? Just tell me what to do and I'll do it...:S:S

man the theory I have always been tought is conventional elipticals no more than 2:1 is the most for Peak performance
anything over 2:1 for Peak performance you need cross-braced..

But that is just a rue of thumb I have always ben taught.. man it is a good question though..
and I would like to hear other opinions because I have a conventional eliptical that I load moe than two to one and I know I am passed its peak performance..

What are a canopy's characteristics when over loaded is a question I cant seem to get answered that is really related to your quesion...

Have you tried writing to the factory demo teams of each manufacturer?

The last people I would take gear recommendations from is someone that is sponsored. They are paid, or given free gear in agreement to recommending that manufacturer's gear.

Call a Ford dealership and ask them what vehicle is best for you………

I would say the next step is something cross-braced. It can be difficult to demo cross-braced canopys, so borrowing from other people may be the way to go. Demo what you can, borrow what you can't. You'll know what you want next after jumping several different canopys.

Yes I jumped a Stiletto 107 for almost 75 jumps. And while I came in with tremendous speed I felt like it did not carry like my 120. I noticed the same on the Vengeance's when I demo'd the exact same sizes. With more wing I got a longer swoop it seemed. Also I noticed that I was overloading the 107's max weight for the Stiletto... Even the 120 I seem to be over loading it just barely. With Gear I am 210-215 lbs.. So the the max weights for the Stiletto would indicate maybe no more than a 1.7:1 wing loading

Oh wait [light bulb on] I have an idea [/light bulb off] So you think the max max weight is the peak peak wing loading?

Let's see here (doing math from those begginer to intermediate to max weight charts they got) B|

So Stiletto was 1.7:1
Vengeance appears to be 1.8ish:1
Velocity doesn't have a chart but after just reading everything about the Velocity it would appear this is the one to consider... Hmmmm 103? or 111? :S:S

So is the max weight the peak wingloading? Watchya think?

The 21 cell crossbrace canopies might not be your cupa' tea. After being a harcore 9cell Stiletto pilot, I think you may find them to fly too different. I would suggest putting a few jumps on a 27cell planform. Like the 27cell Xaos. PM me and I may beable to arange a demo for you. I'll also have several demos at the Memorial Day Boogie in Perris.

I wasn't suggesting that the factory guys would give you an honest apprasial of their competitors products, but that they're absolutely obligated to give you the facts regarding their own factory gear.

I'm thinking, that if you wanted information about the Icarus line, such as what is the most efficient wing loading for each model, an email to JC, Clint, Jim or Luigi would be as accurate as it could possibly be.

Obviously, you'd have to do this with each different factory team.

Well - I can't really speak for anyone but Performance Designs, but the athletes we sponsor (and are very proud to sponsor!) are in most all cases very experienced jumpers.
They are a wealth of information about the canopies we make - and nothing less than experts on flying them.

I'm pretty sure that any member of the PD's Factory Team would be glad to to help a jumper out - anything from what would be appropriate as your first canopy to how to nail that kick ass swoop under your current main - or what might be the correct canopy for you as you aspire to become a better pilot.

By all means, don't dismiss this awesome source for information just because those guys are sponsored - those guys live and breath canopies and flight, and every time I get with any of the boys of PD's factory team they conduct themselves in a professional and pleasant manner - I'm sure that will be your experience too if you get in touch with them.

I don't doubt any of that, but will they recommend a competetor's product over a PD product? What would happen to a PD sponsored pilot that told a jumper to buy an Icarus Extreme VX instead of a Velocity? Sponsored pilots are biased, so I discount their gear recommendations.

Not really true. The retail price for a Velocity is $2283, the retail price of a 21cell Xaos is $2198, and the retail price for a 27cell Xaos (IMO the nicest canopy I've ever flownB|) is $2498.

How did you arive at your prices?

The Square One site said $1712.25 For a Velocity. The more expensive of the PD canopies. Though maybe I am mistaking their price and price I can buy it for? Probably...

I think I'm getting the Xaos anyway...B|B|

I recieved many many PM's saying buy the mother-f-n Xaos and you'll cream your pantsB|...

Size size size... 210-215 exit weight... Hmm 98 or 108? Custom?

That's where the demos come in my friend! I swear by my 93 (custom size) but have flown both the 98 and 108. Gotta play! I didn't check, but are you on the list for Perris Memorial Day? I'll have some demos.....

I talked to Brian Germain about the Samurai. I don't want a smaller canopy (I have a 119 now at about 1.7 to 1) and I was talking to him about the "sweet spot" for my weight. According to him it starts at about 1.5 psf and extends well beyond 2.
