whatthehell 0 #1 August 21, 2006 I'm researching different cameras for helmet mounting. Why do most people go with Sony? What recomendations can you give me to start sortof on the cheap? Thanks
mwabd1 0 #2 August 21, 2006 The quality of Sony camcorders speaks for itself. I had 3 and the oldest has 650 some jumps with no problems. As far as getting started it is going to depend on what type of helmet you choose. I prefer top mount so I have 2 TRV's and a PC109 (to mount side by side with a 20D). Thanks LANC control only found on Sony and Canon products, add to that the solid nature of *most* of the Sony camcorders, the ability to get the cams repaired quickly in the event that you need it, etc, and the quality of image (Sony makes imagers for easily 50% of the camcorder industry) and Sony becomes a semi-defacto choice if you want remote control and solid/trustworthy workflow. Plus, several companies make housings for Sony, but not for other products.
ltdiver 3 #5 August 22, 2006 QuoteAs far as getting started it is going to depend on what type of helmet you choose True, but let me take the thought a bit further (or is it farther... ). What helmet you choose depends on what type of cameraflying you're wanting to do. Basically, if you're a freeflyer (filming the inside of a formation) the most logical choice is side-mount. You don't want to be poking anybody's eye out when you're in close contact and top-mounts are big projections off the top of your head. IMHO, if you're flying FS (formerly called RW) I like the top-mount. Many reasons stated in other posts. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
