Log & Capturing Pal format

Recommended Posts

So im capturing my clips into my computer from a Sony camcorder, using a regular firewire. When the footage switches from ntsc format to pal format i adjust the settings to capture Pal formats however it seems like the pal fomated video will not go through the firewire to my computer. i cant figure it out. is there someting im missing?
i have ntsc and pal formats because i firewired stuff over to my tape from other peoples pal formated cameras.
??? Thanks for any help!

One possible, as it happens a lot with Premiere and Sony Vegas, is that you have garbled timecode on the header of the tape file. This can cause the capture app to see NTSC as PAL and vice versa. Just a shot in the dark, but I've seen it a lot both personally and in various fora.

You might try the demo of Scenelyzer, as it can be instructed to ignore garbled T/C, but won't correctly report file length.

Additionally, it's a very good idea to allow approximately 10-30 seconds go past on a new tape prior to recording at the head of the tape. On cheap DV tapes, this is often an issue.

what software are you using to capture..?

tried Premiere first, then movie maker, then just to watch i used resolume, that did not work either, just like Scenalyzer. :( But, my problem could be that i am using a PC350 PAL like bob.dino said.:)Thanks for all the tips. Any other suggestions?

If it does not cost anything you are the product.

My PAL Sony 350 wouldn't send NTSC footage via Firewire

this is strange because firewire does not care which signal to carry - it's just a cable
once again - if you firewire say to another camera, your 350 does send PAL but does not send NTCS?

You can't output DV NTSC using a DV PAL camera, however you can usually record and view it just fine on the camera itself (the feature "NTSC playback").
You need to capture the footage using a NTSC camera.

I did manage to capture HDV NTSC through a HDV PAL camera, but with HDV the difference is only the framerate not the size.

I don't think it's true - at least not for all Sony cameras
I can firewire an NTSC video from my good old PAL Sony TVR11 to any other dv camera, the second cam will record the NTSC signal which can be later transcoded into PAL through a hardware transcoder
I did it many times

For some reason, it does work camera to camera but it will not work Camera to PC. At least not with the consumer grade Sony cameras, and Premiere or Windows Movie Maker. I'm not sure where the problem lies, perhaps it's with the driver for the camera.

You can transfer to and from various formats and cameras, but you can only capture with firewire from a camera that is the same format as the footage.
