blackfox 0 #1 September 30, 2006 hey basically ive just recently started skydiving and i just want a little video camera that has a decent quality so i can record my jumps i have had video cameras in the past but im not sure about how free falling will effect the shot are my videos going to be blurry? do different lenses impove quality? i want a camera that will record crisp clear videos, but im not necessarily looking for a profesional camera or anything whats a good cheep camera ($300 limit) Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

jimmytavino 16 #3 September 30, 2006 "cheep' is good....when you are buying a car or a lawnmower or a loaf of bread. But when it comes to skydiving and any peripherals associated with it. Cheap is the last thing you want... you ask for " crisp clear videos" and then wanna spend an amount which will get you anything BUT that. Quality costs. and sadly that applies to our hobbies, as well. Save your $$$$$ skydive some more to build up your abilities in the air, THEn think about adding to the distraction and concentration factors, of flying with a camera... IF you are ok with buying a camera and then "firewiring" footage of YOUR jumps, taken by other already experienced camera flyers, then go for it....That's a good way of getting a video record of your own jumps, prior to reaching the level of accompolishment needed to wear a camera yourself.. just my $.02 jmy A 3914 D12122 Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
blackfox 0 #4 September 30, 2006 i dont think you guys understand, i dont want 3rd person video of myself or anyone, i just want my pov shots, and im not going to be filming anything except the ground and the view, you guys need to relax a bit, and stop being so critical, it doesnt take any skill to film the kind of shots that i want, its not like its going to inhibit or distract me in any way maybe $300 is a little low so maybe i can push my budget to $500, im just a poor college kid my opinion is that if you cant answer my questions in a way that will help me, then dont bother responding, i dont need your pessimism Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
jimmytavino 16 #5 September 30, 2006 ... not pessimistic .......Realistic....... sure it would be great to put every image our eyes experience, onto a tape for review later. But maybe that is what our brains are for...it's called memory... I responded as i did, because for one thing your profile tells us that you have FIVE jumps... For another, it's highly advised that Novice or student skydivers, NOT add to the mix the complexity of a camera/and cam helmet. Sure Sure there are small nondescript cameras available more and more nowadays, and maybe it's possible to add one to your gear, only I won't advise it to ANY one..who is at your current experience level.... so please don't take my comments so personal... Do your Instructors????? think it's a good idea??? what have they said when you suggested it???? likely the same thing i said... but I do see from your profile, that you're an army rigger.... so maybe the rules are different for you....... peace jmy Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Sure, you might not be pointing the camera at anything special, but you're still going to be fussing with your camera when you're gearing up (while you should be concentrating on getting all your gear done correctly), in the plane before you exit (you might forget to put on your goggles - you wouldn't be the first), and even though you just want to record some scenery, you'll still be conciously thinking about where you are pointing the camera during your jumps. Plus, you'll likely be adding snag hazards to your helmet if you want to mount it there (assuming that since you don't want to spend much money, you aren't getting a camera helmet (built for that purpose) with a no-snags cover for your camera). Like the other poster said, ask your instructor how he feels about you strapping a camera to your head. I'm sure he'll be able to explain to you in better detail why you should wait. Yes, it's nice to be able to show others what you are experiencing, but for now, just show friends & family video's made by other people. The plain and simple answer is: "Your wrong and you don't even have a clue as to how wrong you are and you wont have a clue till you have made a couple hundred more jumps." I have been the guy who got to deny a student on coach jumps the ability to jump his home made helmet camera. It's even less fun when you have to do it to someone in person. Don't make your instructor have a bad day because you want to jump a camera. It's not nice to do to them and your just going to get all excited and worked up for nothing. p.s.
