Quincy 0 #1 October 5, 2006 In May I upgraded my original Sony Vaio desktop to a newer, beefier Vaio. Lightening has now zapped the motherboard. Based on Sony's website, they are only making the Vaio in very high end, as in $2,000+ models. Luckily, all video and photo files were on an external hard drive that didn't get hit. For video editing have been using Pinnacle for several years. In a Windows PC, what brand and model are you using? Looking for ideas on chip speeds, and system setups that work well. I'm not an IT professional, but, I'm very computer literate for the home user. As for Mac's, I know nothing about them, so, my learning curve would be from scratch. dragon2 2 #2 October 5, 2006 Definately get a dual core processor, my laptop is now quite fast when rendering, even if it is "just" a laptop The rest, I'd go for 2 (or 3) separate largish s-ata 7200 rpm harddrives, a good video card (pci express), firewire, lots of usb2 ports for external harddrives, internal cardreader (not necessay but tidier), decent soundcard with good speakers. Nothing "on-board" if you want to edit video. DVD player and dvd burner. Comfy mouse (I love laser mice and trackballs, I hate ir mice and ball mice). Comfy keyboard (i like the ones with volume keys and mute button). I like my wide screen 19" monitor, get one with a large resolution, maybe get 2 for editing. Dell Latitude D810 1.86GHz intel processor 1.00Gb RAM Firewire card (for all my other devices) My storage and scratch disc is a Lacie, 7200 RPM, 300 GB, and firewire connections. If ya'll want I'll let ya know how well it all comes out when I go to render my next project. 40 min of video w/ music, and a few transitions to and uncompressed format. Im figuring at least 2.5 hours. justinb138 0 #4 October 5, 2006 My recommendation: Asus P5W DH Motherboard Intel Core2 Duo E6600 Processor 2 x 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 RAM 2 or 3 Seagate SATA II drives in a RAID setup.
