velocityphoto 0 #1 October 16, 2006 How is this performing for freefall video and where are you jumping it at?? What kind of climate ? I'm interested ion one but hard drives usually won't work at altitude. Thanks A friend will bail you out of jail , a REAL friend will be sitting next to you in the cell slapping your hand saying "DUDE THAT WAS AWSUM " ................ vid666 0 #3 October 16, 2006 ok, to counter - is it possble to adapt something solid state - as simple as a CF card with - 2.5" adapter to have this thing work ? Anybody care to chime in with more than just "go ahead and try it" ? tnx

Anybody care to chime in with more than just "go ahead and try it" ? tnx No, you cannot adapt a CF card system to work with it. There is no CF system at this time made that can accept a 1394 or USB2 input, fast enough to handle a sample-accurate stream.

I do not have an SR1, but even if I did I would not take it apart - but I am wondering if it has a proprietory HDD in it or if it's using something that can be hacked to adapt a CF card instead of an HDD. Again, I am just hypothesizing, speculation only. - Like the older devices that you could take a lappy 2.5" HDD out and put a CF card in with an adapter - that worked great. The111 1 #6 October 17, 2006 There has been good progress lately in the world of solid state devices. Something like this will be possible soon (already), and with much greater capacity than a CF card (and not much greater size). The question is, is there any reason for the camcorder makers to use solid state over HDD? It's already doable. Remember that we as skydivers are not a significant portion of their business. And if you had enough skills, desire, and time, you could certainly hack something out. Hell, with enough skills, desire, and time, you could build your own camera. www.WingsuitPhotos.com
vid666 0 #7 October 17, 2006 Ok, just because this became interesting : FACTS : SR1 uses a 1.8" Latop sized Hitachi 30GB HDD an adapter does exist to convert CF to a 1.8" plug QUESTION : provided the adapter fits, and doesn't need a secondary power source, will the camera be able to interface with a CF card ? Anbody want to lend give me $1500 so I can play ?
tunnelfly 0 #8 October 17, 2006 Quotean adapter does exist to convert CF to a 1.8" plug Adaptors DO exist, but as DSE mentioned, there are no flash memory cards available right now that could handle the data rate required for a DV stream. All the solid state video cameras on the market right now save compressed video (mpeg2/mpeg4) to the memory. No.1 reason NOT to be an astronaut: ...You can't drink beer at zero gravity... vid666 0 #9 October 17, 2006 I am fairly certain DSE meant that no system exists to stream to (like an ipod) using cameras USB2.0 or FireWire system - I am talking about replacing the inernal non-removeable HDD. the 30GB holds 4 hours of HD video - that's 7680MB per hour or 128MB per minute or 2.13MB per second - most CF cards can go much faster than that. EricTheRed 0 #10 October 17, 2006 actually panasonic has several HD cameras that use solid state recording. http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelList?storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&catGroupId=34401 They just need to be a little smaller (and a lot cheaper) before you'll see many skydiving.illegible usually
DSE 5 #11 October 18, 2006 The Panny P2 cards are as similar to CF as Ford's are to bicycles. Very different design, very different cost. Figure just shy of 300.00 per GB of P2 storage. The card is a standard PCMCIA/Cardbus card, several people are jumping the HVX cam already. Personally, I don't care for them, but lotsa folks do. Very heavy in comparison to it's HDV cousins. We have two; I'm considering selling one of them, because it rarely rents. Further off-topic, Panasonic is moving away from DVCProHD to AVCHD, so maybe this will help bring the cost of the cards down, therefore making this a possibility in the near future.
