DSE 5 #1 January 4, 2007 http://www.elmo.co.jp/suv-cam/en/product/index.html just starting to ship in Australia and Japan, although it was announced a while back. Just rec'd one for testing, but it looks pretty fun. 33 mins of record time at near-PAL resolution, only 25fps at the moment, so perfect for PAL folks, and great for 24p conversion for the NTSC folk. About $800.00 USD
tunnelfly 0 #2 January 4, 2007 This is good news! Please tell us what you think about it, once you tested it. Might just be what I'm looking for... No.1 reason NOT to be an astronaut: ...You can't drink beer at zero gravity...
AdventureOnline 0 #3 January 4, 2007 Hey, is this the VASST DSE? I thought Manny told me you have been skydiving? Dont know if you have seen this cam http://www2.oregonscientific.com/shop/product.asp?cid=6&scid=14&pid=709 Only $180 with 2 gig memory card and will record 60 mins at 30fps and 640x480 direct to internal memory. Drag and drop the video files via USB. Seems to record to a fairly high quality AVI, maybe 5:1 compression, but need to check the file sizes to get an idea. I just got one and will be doing some testing, Ill post some sample videos soon. Brian K in Florida

I've played with this Oregon Scientific, at Govt Expo, and got some files from the cam from another scuba journo. Not too impressed; it really has some nasty chroma artifacts. But, it does get wet, it's cheap, and delivers an interframe format.
AdventureOnline 0 #5 January 14, 2007 DSE, I have some video from the Oregon Scientific cam, but I cant open in Vegas? As Im sure you know its in an AVI wrapper, but not sure about the codec? Thanks Brian K
DSE 5 #6 January 14, 2007 You need an MJPEG decoder/codec installed on your machine for Vegas to read it. There are several freebies out there, http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Motion_JPEG_Codec.htm has one. That'll do the trick
AdventureOnline 0 #7 January 15, 2007 Thanks, that was it. Here is a link to some sailing video I took yesterday with the Oregon Scientific cam. http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid6149278/bclid24526455/bctid422535681 At first I tried it as a helmet cam, but its too zoomed in and was way to shaky to catch things on the boat. There is sound, but with the mic covered for waterproofing the sound is unusable. Its not the best picture, but for $180 including the price of a 2 GIG memory card its not bad. The 2 GIG at max resolution of 640x480 gives you an hour of video at 30 fps. I think it would be a good cam to get started with. It has USB and is drag and drop to your computer. There is also a video out cable and the cam acts as a mini VCR, allowing playback directly to a TV.
boz2841 0 #8 May 17, 2007 Hey Brian I was looking at this cam myself but wondering about the video quality. Have you used it yet? What do you think?
