Sigma 18-50 vs Kit 18-55

Recommended Posts

I am having a need to replace my not so often used 18-55 Kit lens on a XT. I was looking and on E-bay the going rateis about mid $60's for a quick replacement but searching somemore finds a similar Sigma 18-50 (F 3.5) for about $100 and then a jump up from Sigma ~18-50mm (F2.8) Going to the cheaper Sigma might be a better replacement for the Kit lens and I am curious about opinions. I amguessing either Sigma has to be better then the kit lens. I searched and found a couple of references to the Sigma lens but not sure which sigma it is. This will be mostly a ground lens but probably could get some jumping for applications I dont want to go with my Sigma 15mm..

Any thoughts other then goingfor really expensive glass which I know is probably the best option if money was no object....

Check out the buy & sell forum on www.fredmiranda.com as well as read some of the lens reviews for both of those Sigma lenses. If its strictly for ground use, there are some very good deals on name brand glass that can be found there.

I use the sigma - nothing wrong with it - good walkaround lens although not as sharp as my L series stuff. (obviously)
Whether it is worth the price premium over the kit lens is debatable, but its a solid lens and the build is much nicer.
