freeatlast 0 #1 March 16, 2007 I'm heading over to Florida on Weds and would like to get a new camera set-up. I would like to keep the costs down and am thinking of buying a HC5 to be top mounted on a 2K composite helmet. My questions are these ... Is a HC7 worth the extra over the HC5? - Is the image quality that much better with the HC7? I am also looking to buy a 0.45 wide-angle lens like the liquid by cookie plus (if possible) a low profile mount for the camera - can anyone reccomend something suitable that i should be able to get my hands on... Where is the best place to buy in Florida? - I'm not sure if i can mail order the camera etc as i'm not sure that UPS will deliver to my RV!!! Thanks James
The111 1 #2 March 16, 2007 James, I think you can buy them from Best Buy. But you should also be able to get things mail ordered to the DZ for you, I would imagine... ask them in manifest. In this thread they are talking a bit about HC5 and HC7 differences.www.WingsuitPhotos.com
freeatlast 0 #3 March 16, 2007 Ok - i'll see if they'll take my "foreign" credit card I've just emailed manifest ... Does anyone know where i can get a good 0.45 low-profile lens ???
JohnnyZ 0 #4 March 16, 2007 I'm getting ready to put together a new camera system myself. Cookie, as far as I know, is the only one out there with a box designed just for the HC5/7... That's what I'm planning on getting. I e-mailed Bonehead and they said that they're using the box for the HC3, but I'd have to Dremil out some holes to make it work. As far as lenses go, Liquid and Diamond both make an .045 lens with a 37 mm thread. That's what you'll need for the HC5 or HC7. I think that the Liquid lenses are about $30 cheaper than the Diamond lenses. I'm going to go with the HC5 because I'm only planning on using the camera for skydive video. I know that the HC5 and HC7 both record 1080i HD quality video... The HC5 will take 4.0 megapixel stills and the HC7 will take 6.1 megapixel stills... The HC7 also has jacks to plug in external mics, but that's no use to me. I'm pretty sure that you can't shoot stills while recording without there being a pause in the recording. I hope this helps...
champu 1 #5 March 17, 2007 QuoteI would like to keep the costs down and am thinking of buying a HC5 to be top mounted on a 2K composite helmet. Sorry, but that's a funny statement. That said, I'm flying rather than filming 4-way this year, so right this minute I'm not in the market for anything, but I intend to buy the HC5 over the HC7 towards the end of the year because I only want to use it for freefall. /edit to add: Are you going to run into any PAL/NTSC issues bringing a camera back to Europe with you? Not compared to the costs of some of the systems out there - also remember i come from the land of the $40 lift tickets and $300 annual BPA membership !!!! Anyway how can you mention costs when jumping a Mirage system Just joking !!!! I'm definately thinking about the HC5 - the price is attractive compared to the HC7 and by the time i need or want a new camera then something else will be along anyway .... As for the PAL / NTSC issues - i mainly jump in the US ... I can convert NTSC to PAL on my computer (if i remember correctly?) and all my footage will be from the same camera. The only issue is mixing video from several sources and having to get it converted first ... Thanks for all your help though
 Buried 0 #7 March 19, 2007 Just curious. If you are wanting to buy an HD camera why are you wanting to go with a non-HD lens? You will lose picture quality that way. it is B/c of it being low profile? Where is my fizzy-lifting drink? Anyway how can you mention costs when jumping a Mirage system Just joking !!!! Hey... I like my Mirage. (and I'm not even being paid to say that) I was just pulling your leg because when I think of a camera set up meant to "keep the costs down" I picture a freefly helmet with a simple add-on metal top or side mount bracket and maybe a sony HC2X/3X/4X series camcorder off of eBay. The HC5 looks to be one of the nicest freefall cameras out there, and 2k Composites make some of the best helmets I've seen. (I jump an FF2 myself) As with most things you can always spend more if you want to, but the set-up you describe makes for a pretty nice baseline.
 freeatlast 0 #9 March 19, 2007 Actually i liked my Mirage 3 too ... But i eventually lost a Freebag and handles on a cut-away and found out how much those things cost !!! My first camera helmet was an FFX which i really liked - so much that i bought two and have just bought a modified side FX direct from 2K last week and i am hoping to set it all up ready for Flock and Dock 3 As for it being a nice baseline - there's no point in having anything that's poor because i won't buy anything again for a while ... I've actually just got someone to order the camera - so all i've got to find now is a half-decent camera lens
 Join the conversation You can post now and register later.
