HC7

Recommended Posts

I tried:
- Taped the connections port. Less, but still shakes.
- Record in DV, same.
- Shutter speed up to 1/6000, same.
- Wrap all the camera in plastic foil, and with the condom over, same.
- Mount a PC1000, less quality image, but not shake at all, finally a solution !:P

As posted earlier, 1/60 is the shutter speed you need to target.
Of the 3 clips I've rec'd, all are one of two things, and two of them are exclusively the same issue.
rolling shutter.
Google it, you'll understand it. Any CMOS video cam will give you rolling shutter artifacts at a shutter speed of faster than 1/250.
The other clip, I ran it through EcliPs to see what was transpiring (it's obvious that it's not an Iframe-drop issue when you watch it) and I can see that there are corrupted DCT frames. I've seen this before at lower bitrates, but never at 25mpbs. The header data is missing from the short segment of this one clip, so I can't see shutter speed nor framerate (although I know it's 60i). I suspect the shutter is 1/60 but not sure.
I can't head down for shit, but did 4 sit dives on Sat with the exclusive intent of causing issues with my cam(s) and had none with the HC7 or HC5. I shoot with VX on, 1/60, manual focus. I also have a beefy Bogen 3200 series mount, I don't know if that makes a diff, mounted on an FTP, lens overhanging the edge by approx .5"
Head down sucked, although I tried. Got one person in frame for all of a couple seconds, it was fine. Data stream of the clouds/sky/ground is clean. Altitrack logged top speed at 226, so definitely not hitting the speeds you guys are likely hitting.[:/]

226?! I think you far exceeded the normal head down freefall speed by 65mph! I'm surprised the camera didn't peel off the helmet! ROFLMAO!

Thanks for everything your doing to help, but for God's sake SLOW DOWN !

My normal freefly speed is the high 150's to low 160's, and I weigh 215lbs. DAMN!

You looking at TAS or SAS?
Hell, I can't even keep up with the three guys I was with, and I don't think I'm really "head-down" according to them. So, either my alti is screwed up, or you go slow.
I weigh around 225 with gear on. I don't wear a big jumpsuit though. Now you got me wondering about head down speeds.>:(

I think your alti is screwed up. Maybe you should enter the speed diving comps! I can see it now....you in a tight rubber suit haulin' ass at 300+mph! You'd win for sure!

BTW, ordered a blackbox for the HC7. Should be here by Thursday or Friday. Hopefully that will be it for me. I will let you know what i see after I get it in the air.

Don't listen to these guys DSE...150 to 165 is normal but diving to bigways I've seen 289 lol. But who cares;)
I was wondering if you had time to look at the .mt2 I posted and if you were still seeing it as mpeg skip or was there some rolling shutter in there?
I have only seen a problem in a sit. No problems head down, none belly flying. Again I fly with:
Steadyshot - off
X.V. - on
Focus - Manual
Shutterspeed 1/60

To Damonsteel:
Answering from the other thread...Where I am at with this is, I've talked to sony, fought my way through 1st level tech support. Once I got him convinced that I could actually capture to my computer I got bumped up to 2nd level/Product specialist who was a jackass. He basically said, "you bought a consumer camcorder, sorry" I understand sony makes no garuntees for freefall, but if the problem is with some and not others it suggests a problem with the first run...maybe. I got a hold of an HC5 and will test it out this weekend...
Keep you all posted.
PEACE!

I definitely follow you on the rolling shutter artifacts I'm seeing in the video, so I have a few questions about settings on the HC5 to try and get rid of this problem.

It doesn't give you direct access to shutter speed, instead it just has a dummy or "semi-auto" SCENE_SELECT function ("Are you at the beach on a sunny day?", "Is someone blowing out their birthday candles?", "Are you shooting video of the pretty fireworks?", etc.) What combination of this function and perhaps the AUTOSLW_SHTR function do you think will yield best results?

Also, with the 0.5x from royal-lens, what combination of STEADYSHOT and CONV_LENS settings would you recommend?

Thank you much for all your help.

Tell you what:
to save myself some writing...
I realize y'all want answers for both/all three of these newer cams.
I'm currently at the NAB show in Las Vegas, which doesn't publically start until Sunday. Upshot is, I won't be in the air for 2 weeks, but I can take the time after NAB is over, to write a reasonably comprehensive article on setting speeds, best settings, etc. Between now and then, there is no time, so the fastest answer is:
1-Shoot shutter slow or at 1/60th for best results
2-Be sure the lens is covered with either polarizer or UV to prevent air from getting in there. Besides, the MPEG encoder loves polarizers if you've got a good one.
3. Use VX color.

Years ago we had to conclude the "bad batch" theory about the TRV900s. I remember lot of my colleges were jumping those models and they actually figured out what serilal numbers and what DOM were the bad ones. One guy (Mike Meyer) had two TRV900s, one always had the same issue as the HC7 these days (shaking image while sit flying or going head down) the other one functioned 100% at any circumstances.
I know it doesn't solve the problem, but it could justify the "Bad batch" theory. How and why would Sony make mistake (same?) like that anyway?

I know DSE knows what he's talking about, the problem I'm having doesn't seem to be settings. The settings I'm using are the same that are being suggested. I've talked to Sony....a lot and they claim the has only been one run with one firmware on the HC7 line. If it's turbulent air causing the problem I'll prove or exclude that problem this weekend. I should be studying for a promotional exam...but this is more important ;). I'm gonna build a water tight box (yes for all you geeks out there I will hydrostatic test it). I'll jump this box with both the HC5 and HC7. If it resolves the problem then we have an answer...if not, HC1's are going for less then $1000 on ebay. I'll keep you posted.

In that I have no doubt. It does appear the problems I'm having with my HC5 are (at least mostly) due to shutter speed issues.

The manual shutter speed setting that allows you to run at 1/60s is an HC7 only option. I was looking for a workaround on the HC5 to perhaps use its built-in modes to "trick" the camera into giving me what I want.

Supposedly there is a hack out the to turn on all the options in the HC5 that are available in the HC7...I haven't seen it but have heard talk here and some folks down at Elsinore were talking about. Hunt around and you might get lucky...or you might fuck up your camera;)...worse
