new film-chick needs help

Recommended Posts

It is all personal preference. The way I did it was all based on what I saw at my home DZ ask if you can try on some of the video set ups that are being used at your dropzone. Really it comes down to what features you want so go out and try to look at as many different styles as possible. Everyone's head is a bit different so try a bunch on and see which style fits you the best. As for the rest of the stuff I prefer light weight stuff and when I first started jumping video I was on a Sabre 1, so my dumbass was getting spanked way too much, so when I was buying everything I always went straight to the weight. Good luck

If you're jumping a camera with a Sabre 1 you need to go lightweight. The FF2 from 2K Composites is light and smooth. My friend ordered one with the cutaway chin cup I think he said it was $450. My Velocity from Skydance Headgear was $350 but it is a lot heavier. If money is an issue you should check the classifieds for used helmets and ebay for cameras, but the helmet and camera have to be compatable. There is a big difference between the PC and HC series cameras as far as mounts go.

My momma said I could be anything I wanted when I grew up, so I became an a$$hole.

Photographer or videographer?

Like Chris said, the FF2 is a great side mount helmet...PM me or visit my site linked below if you want some more info on them.

As for a camera, whether you are looking at video or still cameras, there are many options, a lot depends on personal preference. The norm for video is Sony in either mini-dv or hdv, and the norm for still is an SLR or DSLR from Canon or Nikon.
Hope that helps...

If you're thinking about being a profesional skydiving photographer, you might want to rethink that sidemount decision.

Side mount severly limits your options when it come to equipment you can use, is harder on the neck, and more prone to camera damage and loss.

You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

im welcome to all advice!

Write down everything you can think of to ask on here (yes even the stupid questions) once you have your list of questions you want to ask about, go down the list using the search function in the fourms and search your list of questions first, before posting.

i have no idea where to begin when looking for equipment (helmet and camera). i know i'm interested in getting a side-mount versus on top.

Kind of stupid to say "you have no idea where to begin, but you know your interested in a side mount and not top mount. How do you know that, from looking a photos or because that's what the cool kids told you to get ?

If I were you, I'd strongly consider getting a top mount. Sony isn't making anything really suited to side-mount anymore, and who knows if they will again. You'd be stuck buying a used PC and if you ever decide to upgrade & go top mount you will be stuck with a nice helmet with holes poked in the side of it.
