sdctlc 0 #1 April 18, 2007 OK, my lenses are geared towards good light conditions and I was trying to take some lower light pics and was frustrated. Not skydiving related but it had me looking at a gap in my lens for either a normal lens (digital 1.6 crop factor so probably thiking of a 30mm or so) or a moderate zoom something like the 17-55 rannge. Key is looking at the aperature for low light conditions, leading to at least the F2.8 or something in that range. I have looked and see good things on the Canon 17-55mm IS F2.8 but $1000 is more then I want to spend. IS THAT LENS WORTH THAT? I can pick up a large aperature non-zoom for a good price like the canon 50mm f1.4 the 50mm F1.8 or the sigma 30mm 1.4 which will give me AWESOME low light condition shooting for a normal lens but I guess I like the thought of a little motre range with a zoom. Given that and not wanting to spend $1000 for the canon what are the opinions out there? Something like the Sigma EX DC 18-50 f2.8.. Am I giving up a lot with this? I have a Sigma 18-50mm currently only it is the cheaper 3.5-5 version and does great in the light but shitty in the low light. Thanks for the words of wisdomn ahead of time. Icon134 0 #2 April 18, 2007 What would you like to shoot with it... I have had tremendous success with my 50mm Canon f/1.8. Its great glass and inexpensive to boot. Its perfect for pictures of people and groups indoors with nothing but room lighting. Here is a picture of my cousins dog Mia (whom I shot while sitting on his lap) There is some daylight coming in from a nearby window and a lamp nearby but it is handheld. Shot at ISO 400, f/2, w/shutter speed of 1/60 sec.Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
LouDiamond 1 #3 April 18, 2007 If I remember correctly, you have an Xti, right? I threw my 50mm 1.8 on my 300 body and took some random low light shots that came out ok . My question is do you intend to use the lens in low light without using the onboard flash or an additional flash?"It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
Stumpy 284 #4 April 18, 2007 Before i opened this i instantly was thinking - 50mm f1.4. Its a much nicer lens than the gen 2 1.8. I have the EX DC 2.8. Nice range, nice build, nice focus, but only average sharpness. Its an adequate walkaround lens but as soon as i can afford it i'm going to get the 24-70L. Bigger, heavier and way more expensive though and i don't tend to use stuff at the really wide end (apart from my 15mm for jumping!) - if i do maybe i'll pick up the 16-35 as well.Never try to eat more than you can lift

Nice shot! Matt, you beat me to it. ewww... y'all are sick... Mia (the dog) was sitting in my cousins lap. and I've heard the same thing that others have... the f/1.8 Gen 2 (which is what I have) doesn't seem to have the build quality of the canon f/1.4 but it is a nice lens... I also like my 90mm f/2.8 Macro lens but its a little long for most indoor shots I also used my 580EX flash in this shot (though more or less for fill as this room is pretty bright) Shelly (the long haired dachshund) was being held by my cousin... and I was request to take the picture... I spent several years taking pictures with fixed lenses they can be very useful... and are usually much less expensive (though my macro lens was $400) Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... champu 1 #8 April 19, 2007 Quote ...as soon as i can afford it i'm going to get the 24-70L. Easily my favorite ground lens. Performs admirably in low light with or without a flash. It may be a little wide at the short end on a full-frame body, but on a crop body the range is perfect. Heh, this is funny to do sometimes... compare: PnS (Canon SD450) vs SLR (RebelXT, 24-70 2.8L, 580EX) in the same conditions...

sdctlc 0 #10 April 19, 2007 What about the SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8 EX DF LENS Any experience with this? It seems to fall below the Canon and no IS but the other qualities in reviews seem good. Anybody tried it? I will probably pick up a fixed prime lens at some point but as noted, I am looking to fill a gap with a little versatility. BTW, Nice dog pics Scott C."He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!"

champu 1 #12 April 19, 2007 I don't think anyone makes an IS lens that only goes as long as 70mm. There's really no need for it. I haven't shot the Sigma 28-70mm, but in general I don't care much for lenses that don't have internal focusing mechanisms, they are slower and feel clumsier to me. I would probably opt for the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro DF, which is not that much more expensive.
grayhghost 0 #13 April 23, 2007 I think you will be really happy with the Canon 35mm f/2 or, for a little more money, the Canon 50mm f/1.4. Zoom with ya feet!
