Capture NTSC footage from a PAL camera

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've tried looking around for a solution to this problem but not having any luck. I figured someone on here must have come across this before!

Ok I have a Sony PC109E PAL camera which works fine with my computer and Adobe Premiere Pro when downloading my standard PAL footage. I also have videos of my jumps from other peoples point of view but in NTSC format. Now my camera can actually play both PAL and NTSC formats, i.e. it will play on the LCD screen on the viewfinder and will play when connected to a television. My problem is however I cannot seem to download it to my computer via Adobe Premiere, Sony Picture Package, Nero or any other video capture software I have tried.

I was just wondering if anyone knows a way of getting this NTSC footage onto my PC so I can cut together a video.

As a less important secondary question does anyone have a preferred way of converting PALto NTSC or vice versa for making a video in Premiere? After research I'll be using the interepret / rendering method in After Effects, just wondering if anyone has any better ideas.

Thanks for your time.

Your first point: AFAIK it can't be done. You need to capture NTSC footage directly to a pc using an NTSC camera. This may change with HDV cameras but for DV I've never been able to do it.

Your second point has been talked about here quite a few times. i use premiere pro only to mix and match, no after effects needed and much easier. Do a search on my method I've written about it here a few times.

Thanks for your reply :)
I've figured a way of getting NTSC footage from my camera onto the PC now though! I'm half way through the process of recording it from my camera onto a DVD recorder and will then convert the resulting VOB files on the disc into AVI's using the PC, should hopefully work out ok, maybe a loss of quality but better than nothing.

Searched your post regarding NTSC / PAL conversion, will try as you suggest with the PAL and NTSC projects.

Thanks

As far as I was aware it can be done. I don't want to contradict Dragon, as I've never done it with a 109 so can't directly comment, but I have definitely done it with my old PC101E... and I don't recall having to do anything funky to get it done.

Once it was on the PC it was still in NTSC mind and thus pretty much useless to me for my PAL edit... and no I couldn't be arsed to convert it... but I got it on the PC at least and I guess I could have converted it if the footage was really worth it.

Maybe try fiddling with your capture settings - make sure you have adobe set to capture NTSC because I thought the PAL camera was able, (effectively at least), to output in NTSC - as such I would have guessed that Adobe had to think it was capturing NTSC when I would guess it's probably set to capture PAL if that's your usual settings... though of course I could simply be wrong...

...but I am sure I've done it in the past, with a PAL camera using footage shot in NTSC and fire-wired over to my camera.

Ive had no issues whatsoever capturing NTSC tapes using my PAL sony PC8, and have done it from other cameras as well..

Premiere does seem to have a bit of a glitch every once in a while when you use automatic scene detection and/or timecode when capturing this way.

Just hitting play on the camera, and then record on your NLE program should work fine..?
