MB38 0 #1 September 2, 2007 For those that have been following the RED ONE project, the first 25 cameras shipped on Friday. The camera shoots 4K RAW [4096x2304@12 bit] in a 10lb package [plus lens, battery]. It's capable of recording to compact flash. I've been in touch with a few camera flyers about getting it into the sky. I don't own a camera, but I did shoot with it on Friday and Saturday. As soon as everything lines up, I'll get one onto somebody's head for some freefall 4K. I couldn't resist the stupid photo at the end of this post. It's a big puppy [compared to HDV/etc. cameras], but it's smaller than most/any film camera you'll see up there. With a prime lens and a small battery, a 12-13lb package is achievable.I really don't know what I'm talking about.

Dont get me wrong, if I had limitless funds and wanted top of th line this looks like it would be AWESOME!! Scott C. Not even close. This is part of why the RED phenomenon is what it is. The closest camera in capability until about 1 year ago, carries a body cost of 190k, lenses not included. We shoot HDCAM 900, which has a complete package cost of around 150k. RED is unusual, and is a very unique camera kit. It does have some significant disadvantages, but it also has some sweet advantages. There is also the new Silicon Imaging 2K cam, which is a tad more practical and offers a significantly better software package. It's been shipping for about 4 months now. Either way, the cost of awesome cameras has been brought down due in great part to RED and the research the RED team/Jim Jannard of Oakley fame have brought to our industry. MB38 0 #7 September 3, 2007 There's only one other 4K camera on the market... and renting it for one week costs more than buying the RED ONE. Its value is estimated at a half-million. As for the lenses, Arri makes a very similar zoom to the RED 18-50mm zoom... but Arri's is $45,000. As for the primes, $20,000 for the set is a bargain compared to a set of Cooke S4s... which I've seen go for over $200,000. Spot pretty much hit it on the nose.I really don't know what I'm talking about.
sdctlc 0 #8 September 4, 2007 Quote I've seen go for over $200,000. I had an idea that production cameras were really spendy but WOW! Still I dont see too many skydivers going out and shelling $25K on the camera and lens for a Tandem video Maybe Joe Jennings or those shooting aerial work for skydiving stunts in movies . This technology, I am guessing, should/could/will open up for some better quality non- computer generated skydiving scenes but again not for the 4 way or tandem vid. That said, from a trickle down point of view, it is cool to see better cameras get closer in price to what a meer mortal can work towards. I am guessing the day is comming it wall be much more reasonable for our tiny segment. Scott C."He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!"
MB38 0 #9 September 4, 2007 Well... it's partially my fault. What I didn't make clear is that this is a camera that is aimed at the narrative cinema market. There are already several studio features shooting with this camera. To projects like that, saving camera, film, processing and transfer costs is great and all... but dropping literally tens of thousands of dollars per day on the camera department is not out of line. From a skydiving perspective, it's a niche thing. Unless you've ever flown a 35mm motion picture film camera on your head... you probably won't fly this bad boy. I can think of about 5 or 6 flyers who I could see getting their hands on this in the near future. But you know what? When we do shoot with it, I'll be sure to get it on some zoo loads [if only for the irony].I really don't know what I'm talking about.
