Cut Away Systems??

Ok this question is very direct as I've not been able to find an answer here or via Google... yet anyway.

Does anybody here know or have first hand experience using either a Cookie or BoneHead cut away system on a Rawa?

I bought a used one here on the classifieds and am looking forward to beginning with it, but I want to add a cut away system for sure and sooner rather than later. I don't want to let complacency set in and not do it.

I was in the same position you are now, wanting the reasurrance of a safe cutaway that you can rely on to work first time when you need it to. but stay fastened when you dont.I asked around the dropzone and the other camera flyers and heard some worrying comments about some of the cutaways on the market and chose the 2kcomposites model.I have attched a photo of the cutaway before i fitted it,its tidy and though i have not had to use it in anger i have tested it on the ground and its operated first time every time.

Are there particular concerns you can mention, whether or not the the risks turn out to be valid?

A major one would be how well a particular design operates under heavy load.

I actually had my FF2 cutaway completely fail my first tests. It was set up like in your picture. With load on it, the white loop was getting pinched between the small ring and the chincup, so it wouldn't release. The more pressure on it, the harder it locked. In practice, it PROBABLY would have worked because it only locked when the load was applied symmetrically. When one side got pulled more than the other, it would release.

I ended up flipping the strap with the small ring over, so the white loop comes from underneath and ends up on top of the small ring. Works fine that way. I think I could have drilled a hole in the chincup where that pinch-point was to solve the problem too.

I think the problem for me is that I have the strap about as small as it could be. The chincup is basically right up against the helmet when it's tightened down. I think that causes the strap to be very tight against the chincup... a longer strap probably wouldn't have that same problem, and obviously doesn't in your case.

I don't have any pictures of it, but I built a cutaway for my wife's FF2 which came without one. It's basicly like the the one pictured, but the loop does not go through the chincup, but rather just through the strap. A bit hard to describe, but quite effective.
