What to do with your helmet on takeoff?

why not eliminate the buckle and just have a solid strap?

I wouldn't want to undo my chest strap in flight. And attaching it to the seat belt might make it useless.

You could loop the nylon strap through your chest strap and then attach your helmet to the strap. After takeoff you could unhook your helmet and unloop the nylon strap without undoing your chest trap.

The solid loop would be stronger and lighter.

Only speaking as a funjumper, I always appreciate the camera guys who secure their helmets.

My camera flights so far have all been chest-strap secured. Doke raises a good point for "weakest link".
My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

Here is a copy of an email from a good friend of mine Rhonda who had an unfortunate aircraft incident in August. I'm for wearing your helmet for take off regardless of the need to shoot footage. Put your helmet on and take your camera off it's mount to shoot the video. There are a bunch of systems out there that allow you to do this and wear your lid.

Hey Cookie,
I don't know if you have heard but we had a little plane crash on Sunday. D** forced landing flipped on impact. There was five of us on board (Me, Shane P, Shane G, and Justin
F and Des the Pilot ) including the pilot. I think I caught the brunt of the impact. Pricey and I were Airlifted to hospital, Shane G (Shane and BEC from T****) has five rib fractures and bruising of the liver so he gets to spend two nights in hospital. I have massive bruising on my head, black eye and my head looks like elephant man. I also have major sweeling and bruising on the thoracic vertebrae. I am telling you all this because i got out of hospital today and picked up my helmet. It is absolutely fucked. Big cracks and twisted and i gotta say it saved my life. If it wasn't for that helmet I would be dead. I am a very lucky girl and there are many reasons why i am still here but one of them is because i had a good helmet. Thankyou I intend to keep it for posterity sake so i will show you the carnage. Love and Kisses Rhonda

Edited to add: Rhonda had left her camera's on the ground for this jump.

At the DZ I've been jumping at we are asked to film the takeoff for tandem/aff skydives. Fortunately I can do this while sitting on the floor of the plane while still wearing my helmet (and I don't have to remove my cameras)

I'm all for wearing or securing camera helmets while the plane is taking off. My helmet isn't overly light so I wouldn't want it flying around the cabin.
