Sony upgrade

Recommended Posts

Dunno if anyone else received it, but Sony sent a flyer that I received today. They're offering upgrades/trade-ins. Very weird indeed, I can't think of a time that any part of the consumer video market has done anything like this.
Their website offers a trade in on just about any kind of consumer vid cam there is. I was pleased to see my Canon GL2 is worth about $750.00 to them :)Anyway, if you're into it... http://www.sony.com/upgrade is the URL.

I was surprised to see that too. What a weird marketing approach.
The PC series are pretty niche, I think, but anyway, figured I'd share. Still scratching my head.
What are they going to do with all these cameras? dump em' in some third world country as a tax write off?

They did this a while back too but they were offering trade ins for credit on any new camcorder. They were lowballing the prices something fierce, they wanted to give me $20 for my PC110, 3 batteries and something else. The 110 was broken and I still got $250 for it on eBay. I think this is were some of their reburbs and parts come from but the rest.. no clue other then they have to recycle them for thier toxic parts once they have them again.
Yesterday is history
And tomorrow is a mystery

To add to what everyone else has said, the prices at Sony Store are significantly higher than say, Amazon or B&H. HC5, for example, $800 on B&H vs $1100 on Sony.

So, assuming you wanted to trade old camera in for HC5, unless Sony's trade-in values were $300 HIGHER than what you could get on the open market (eBay), you'd be silly to do this. And they're not $300 higher, since they don't even total $300.

No offense, Spot... just doing some math. :P;)

I didn't look at it from that side, either. Was just surprised to get this pamphlet in the mail, never seen anything like it from Sony.
Bear in mind, the consulting I do with Sony is the broadcast side/software tools, so have no affiliation with, relationship with, nor fondness for the Electronics divisions. I buy my small cams from same places you do.

DSE,
Thanks for the info. My VX-2000 worth $600 according with them, plus I can get another $300 for my more junk I have.
Would it be smart to trade in for an HC-7?
Can the HC-7 perform better (beside the HD) than the VX-2000?
They selling the HC-7 for $1400 (lot more than other places) so I would still spend $500.
Thanks for your advice.

I remember the broadcast division of Sony also doing this this some years ago. I was told back then, that they preferred to do it this way, rather than just lowering their prices, for financial (book keeping) reasons.
There seems to be a difference between making 1000 € and making 2000 €, while spending 1000 €.

But that was Sony professional, not consumer.
