How dangerous is this

Recommended Posts

OK guys I recently posted a msg about how the slider on my 150 Hornet is frequently to high for me to grab and collapse. (risers are not the problem)
So my question is how dangerous would it be to have a rigger add a toggle inbetween the 2 slider drawstrings as shown in the attached pic in BLUE

If that loose drawstring wraps a d-line, you could have a slider all the way up mal. I have to be careful about the kill line tabs on my slider for the same reason. The farther that line hangs out of the slider, the more likely it is too happen. Maybe one continuous line through both channels in the slider, so there is no exposed tab to snag and still an easy to grab loop in between.

I actually (probably) had that happen; had to chop my safire cause it spun up.

Icarus said they had more problems with the longish slider tabs (or rather, slider lines in my case). My rigger fixed it for me; he shortened both lines and put easy-to-grab tabs on them, now they're snug against the fabric instead of sticking out 10 or more cm.
Icarus now has another slider model.

Anyone know where I can get longer arms from??[:/]

Have you tried getting some shorter risers? I could not reach the slider on my Sabre 135, ordered some shorter risers and I now have no problems reaching it.

I had the same problem with the slider on my Icarus Crossfire.

I fingertrapped a line connecting both tabs to make a continuous loop, and now I just have to reach up easily and grab the loop. I've put 500 jumps on it this way with no problems.

A thick line continuous loop seems to me to have less chance of causing any opening problems then the long tabs sticking out. But, I'm open for criticism...this may be a bad idea and I just don't know it.

It's cheap, too.

the risers arn't an issue I can reach higher than the risers. The sldie will frequently stay about 4-5' above my head.

I have the same problem under my 190 hornet. But a rear riser flare will easily bring the slider down to the risers. So I would play with toggles and rear risers to bring the slider down before you start fabricating anything onto the slider itself. It works for me every time.

Can't help you with that, but I have to main canopies and short arms as well. Solution for one was slinks and very short risers, 'solution' for the second is slider bumpers and regular risers (can't reach the slider this way but at least it'll definitely stay up instead of coming down over my toggles when I don't want it to).

4 to 5 feeet?!?!?!?

That's nearly a slider-up malfunction. You should talk to your rigger about why the slider isn't coming down all the way. Adding handles to help you grab it isn't the solution, figuring out why it won't come down in the first place is. Sliders should come down to the top of your risers.

If you're willing to deal with it, a good way to bring a slider down is by pumping the brakes. Pull the brakes down to furll flare, and let them back up smoothly. Repeat as necesary.

If the slider doesn't come down.... I sure as hell wouldn't land it...

did you think of getting smaller risers?I had the same problem, and in my xfire99 i cant just crawl up there whith out getting a violennt spin.I got Atom risers(parachute de france),it works for me.How ever the 3ring system is reversed to what you are used to.only different are that you´ll need a pull in the risers to cut it,and not like normal 3 ring were you can cut no matter what. There has also been some accident whith the toogle were people get caugt.i never had that problem while i use the pouch on the bakck on the riser to stow my toogle.

You could also ask some manufactors if they could costumice a pair for you.(just rember to keep the risers the day you sell your rig, meaning set the old pair on again..)

I'd recommend pumping the rear risers (gently), as I do on my velocity who's slider is always taking it's time to come down, instead of pumping the brakes because it gets a lot harder (and things get much faster) with the canopy in full flight to get the slider.

Here's an idea.........take the slider off and go without one.......makes just as much sense as all the modifications you've done to the origional canopy thus far and after a few jumps, maybe you'll figure out a basic fact..........The designer didn't think it was appropriate to consult you for your whims on how to make a parachute.......and how to get consistent results for thousands of operations.

If you want to troll... got to Talkback. PISA shipped some of the larger Hornets with oversized sliders to make them open softer. If your slider is too large this can cause it to hang up. Try and put a slightly smaller slider on it for a jump or two and see if that fixes the issue.

Jumpers come up with a lot of modifications to their canopies that are better then the factories have. The H-mod, Hooknswoops Safire mod, the Roq mod, pocket sliders on original Sabres... these all make the canopy proform better then it did coming out of the factory doors. I would'nt dismiss jumpers and their modifications... I think that Jaro, Brian and a few others started out as jumpers playing with mods on a canopy and look at where its lead them.
