if i could remember the name...

anyways, was talking to a guy at the dz about a new camera supposidly HD which records straight to a card, no tape, no hard drive, no DVD...and apparently the quality is good, etc. Now i'm looking to buy/build a new camera setup for myself, but can't for the life of me figure out what the camera was called....anyone got any guesses? And i would ask him again, but i'm moving out of state this weekend, so i wont be seeing him at the DZ for probably 6 years

Sony's CX7 is probally what you are looking for. Get a high end PC to edit on and some software that supports AVCHD codec and you are good to go.

You can probably get AVCHD codec somewhere. I know applications like VirtualDub and TMPGEnc are supposed to support it. I did a quick search online, but didn't see a download anywhere. PowerDVD 7 supposedly installs the codec with it when installed.

I'm just curious after reading this.

One source said Premiere doesn't support it, but it didn't say which version and surely the newest version does. I would hope.

Hmm.. after a little more searching it sounds like that format is one of those troublesome formats that only certain software is supporting, others are supporting partially and there might be some licensing crap, as always, making these things a living hell for us all. Am I right?

Premiere currently does not support AVCHD.
Vegas, Liquid, Ulead Movie Studio, Pinnacle Studio, iMovie, FCS2, Canopus Edius all support AVCHD.
No codec to download, even Windows Movie Maker with the update supports it.
Just not Adobe.

thanks, i'll be looking into this camera as it seems pretty small...but seen as how i mainly use adobe, i'm guessin i might lean towards something adobe supports

premiere will eventually support it. Adobe is usually late to the game. Took them what....10 years to support DVCProHD, and to do that, they had to buy Serious Magic.
I wouldn't worry about the format that much, there are several options in place for the Premiere user, such as Elecard. It merely means the editing/ingest time becomes longer until Adobe releases AVCHD support, which I expect will come before April.
