Mac File Name - Can't Open on PC

Recommended Posts

I was delivered photos on a CDR, finalized.

The CD was made on a mac. The user renamed the files. A few files have "?" and other invalid characters for a PC in the file name. "Who is this?.jpg"

I tried to drag and drop to my computer. Errors out with an "invalid file name" message. Tried XCopy, hoping to use the short file name flag "/n" to copy. Same error. Tried opening in Photoshop and other aps to "Save As". No go. Tried to rename the source file, but obviously since the CD was finalized you can't do that.

Ideas of how to get these photos renamed so I can work with them?

Use Total Commander (WEB site) for this job.
Just right click on the file with an '?' and press F6.

Then you are able to type a new file name :)

Ideas of how ... I can work with them?

Get a MAc :D

I might borrow one - but to have one. That is ludichrist (especially since ALL the software I use to make money is only available for a PC.):P

Any of the new Intel Macs will run PC software... in most cases, faster than a lot of PC's will... not so ludicrous...

Well... they run PC software under boot camp, parrallels or fusion, yes, however the keywords are.... "They run PC software". It's the best of both worlds. You want to use a mac, buy a mac. You want to use Windows... buy a mac. Seems like a simple choice to me.

My macbook pro will run pretty much any operating system out there. Personally I only use the mac end. On a very rare occassion I'll fire up Fusion and run windows for whatever reason like once a month, but if I need both, I have both. I believe you can run mac stuff on windows boxes too buy using something called a Hacintosh, but I am under the impression that it requires lots of hacks and tweaking ans such. You want to do it on a mac you just install it. It's simple and it works.

Ok...

Downloaded the trialware of UltraISO.

Made a CD image file of the CD.

Opened the image file, and dragged and dropped the files out of UltraISO to my own file folder.

UltraISO removed all the "?" and other characters.

Problem solved.

And - I DID NOT USE A MAC.:P

Just *try* running video editing or photo editing software under Parallels or Fusion. I dare you.:P
I'm a MacBook Pro guy...believe me, I wish it could.
This Mac vs PC shit gets really old. As someone who owns nearly a hundred computers (most of em' laptps for training camps), both platforms have problems, both platforms have benefits, both platforms are sexy, both platforms are a PITA at certain levels. Photoshop CS3 runs *much* better on the PC side of a Mac, and even faster on my new VIAO. Premiere runs like shit on a Mac. Keynote is so much better on a Mac, and so is After Effects. Lightroom runs better on the PC side of my Macbook.
Some like blondes, some like brunettes, some like redheads, and I happen to love Motion, DVDStudioPro, and AfterEffects. Oh, and AvidXpress runs better on a Mac. On the PC side...I can't begin to enumerate the things you can do that a Mac can't.
They're just tools, folks. But on the laptop side, no one has ever built a laptop as sexy as a Mac. Funny thing is, Sony built Apple laptops for a long time. Thank god my Powerbook isn't the piece of shit my iPod is (all 3 of them).
