RossDagley 0 #1 January 6, 2008 I'm asking this for a friend, so any assistance would be helpful. A friend wants to start jumping camera, but does't know what camera to buy - new or used doesn't matters so much, but this will be their first camera. They will probably be using a cookie MXv helmet, with a sidemount box, although that isn't set in stone. The do only want to jump a sidemount though - that much is set in stone. The question is, what camera to buy? I jump a PC1000 myself, but they're really getting very hard to find now - I've searched ebay etc, but can't find one... Is there much in the way of sidemounts now (new cameras)? I really don't even know where to start looking. Most people I jump with (and my friend jumps with) are still using PC1000's, PC105's, PC120's, etc, etc. What would people generally recommend if looking for a new camera? The budget isn't that important - probably upto £450-500 ($800), but i guess ease of use is the most important feature. I'm completely confused by the array of options available now. Thanks for any pointers on where to start looking.Edit to clarify - Ideally NEW camera, not second hand. I was only looking second hand for the PC1000 really... PhreeZone 20 #2 January 6, 2008 New, there are really no side mount friendly cameras that have came out in the last 1-2 years. People are putting really wide cameras on the side but that is getting really far out there and we are going to start seeing a repeat of al the riser slap issues from a few years ago. If you are looking at new your choices really are only top mount friendly cameras. Second hard if you stick to the PC series you'll be fine to side mount. If he'll top mount he can jump to High Def for the price you are looking at in a used HC1 or HC3 camera. New the CX7 is not far off your price point but it requires a really beefy computer to edit on and sincei ts flash based there is no tape so you have to dump it to the computer all the time.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
dragon2 2 #3 January 6, 2008 New, I'd get a HC5 (eur 700 and up) or a CX6 (more expensive), both are topmount cameras, the CX6 has no lanc and needs a computer, the hc5 has lanc and still uses tape. For sidemount, a 2nd hand pc series is the only option really. ciel bleu, Saskia
RossDagley 0 #4 January 7, 2008 Thanks guys - I guess we're stuck with the older PC range. I've setup a ebay thingie to email me when someone lists a PC350 or a PC1000 so hopefully I'll not have to wait that long... Top mount really isn't an option which is a pity. Thanks very much for the advice so far.
DSE 5 #5 January 7, 2008 Good luck! those cams are fairly hard to come by, look through eBay's history...Hopefully your friend has improved his skills a bit since the last jump you'd posted about. I use that vid in one of my presentations. Nice to see you over in these parts, Ross.
RossDagley 0 #6 January 8, 2008 Thanks DSE The friend is in fact a girl, and nothing to do with my past exploits If by "these parts" you mean the Photo&video section of these forums, well hey - i actually only check a few sections here on DZ.com now - this is one of them. Full of useful info, and strangly, a calmer place than the usual basing in other forum areas Re the camera - someone on here has PM'd me regarding a camera they've got available - I'll check this evening with my friend to see if she's interested. Hopefully it'll all come out in the wash.
scargill 0 #7 January 8, 2008 Hi Ross! I'm in the process of looking for camera + helmet at the mo! I'm looking at a Sony HC37 currently £150 in the sale in Argos! SImilar in size to the old PC range. 2K composites have a new helmet out - the FF3 - which I'm thinking of getting too. Price for the shell inc box is £200+vat if you order before end of Jan! Sales pitch over! I think a decent price for new gear for a first timer! If anyone has any feedback on either of these products I'd be glad to hear it! Infact thats why i'm looking here today to see if anyone is using them already! See ya at the AGM if ur going!

As for ring sizes, this guy is incorrect and you should check before buying. The 106/7/9 series for instance is 25mm thread, not 30mm as this guy is telling you. That said, I have a 109 and have never looked back. If looking on ebay, ensure that you are looking at the 'e' european (PAL) model. *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
