Which Still Digital Cameras can you use with a Bite Switch?

Recommended Posts

I have gone to several camera stores to date. None of them have any idea of which connection a bite switch uses on a Digital Still camera.

Do you know which models are compatible with a 2.5mm plug (Or the old, small plugs) or at least the name of the port that it plugs into?

Failing that, is it possible to soder the bite switch onto the camera?

Cheers.

Hi chris. Check the paragear catalogue for the difference. You'll find some cameras (300D, 350D, 400D) use the 2.5mm jack plug, whilst others (generally the higher end cameras) - the 20D, 30D, 40D, 5D, 1D etc) use a 3 pin custom connector. You'll simply need to get the one most appropiate for your camera.

The name of the port is simply the remote shutter release socket. Its' the same socket as used for a cable shutter release used by "regular" photographers.

Any camera that has a cable remote can be used with a biteswitch, if the biteswitch doesn't come with the plug you need you can buy a regular cable remote (ebay is cheapest) for your camera and solder it to the biteswitch or to a female plug that accepts the biteswitch (useful for quick switching if biteswitch breaks). You don't want to solder the switch to the camera ;)

It's even possible to use a camera with an IR remote with a biteswitch, it's just more hassle.

If you want to skydive with your stills camera, buy a canon 350d, 400d, 40d, 5d, also older models 2nd hand or buy a nikon d70s (2nd hand), d80, d200, d300.

One thing that may be obvious to people on this forum, but not so obvious to the outside. You will usually only find remote shutter release ports on DSLR cameras. They are very rare on all-in-one, or point-and-shoot cameras. (Sorry if you already knew that.)

Camera shops don't know about "bite" switches, but they should know if a camera has a "remote shutter release."
