will this suit my needs?

Recommended Posts

i have a hurricane side mount setup with a hc20 and was wondering what type of lens i should add. i narrowed my cost options down to a .45 lens for now, and saw this one on ebay. is this the kind of lens i should look for or what is a better option in this price range?

thanks in advance,
and no im not jumping it this season...

If that's your price range go for this model over the model you posted: http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-VCL-0625S-0-6-X-25MM-Conversion-Lens-VCL0625S-New_W0QQitemZ150203264392QQihZ005QQcategoryZ64327QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

(that's not an endorsement of that particular seller - I'm only commenting on the lense model he's selling).

The lens I link to is great, equivalent to about a 0.45 from most other manufacturers and will give you much better quality footage than random non-branded stuff in the same price range. Pay attention to the thread size - that lens comes in a number of different thread sizes and you should be able to get one that matches your camera without the need for a step-ring. The one I link to has a 25mm thread for example - there's one with "30" in the model number instead of the "25" which has a 30mm thread.

As a small point, it's not really reasonable to say "this is equal to XXX from other manufacturers, as it varies so greatly. Additionally, if you're not comparing the lenses on the same camera with the same zoom settings, you're not coming from an equal baseline. The widest setting is rarely the same on any individual model camcorder compared to another.

thanks so much for everyone's responses. i intend to get a cookie wide angle later on down the line, but as for now i want something that is going to add to my view without making my setup unsafe. i really appreciate the recommendations from everyone!

Are you suggesting the Sony is more safe than a Cookie, Waycool, or Royal? The Sony SONY VCL-0625S is roughly 3 times as thick/long as a Cookie, Waycool, or Royal lens, and has a flare which is quite a bit larger than the front of the camera, whereas a Cookie, Waycool, or Royal lens would sit flush to the camera housing.

Then what's the rush. Save up your money while your busy not jumping your set-up, and have a better selection when you do start jumping it.

For that matter, why the hell are you building a camera helmet you're not going to jump? You're clearly on a budget, why not put the money towards making more jumps?

Toys toys toys... Come on we've all been there and its only $19 for the lens. That's not even a jump ticket and will totally work for him. I've seen many of these lense get ripped right off, that plastic is not that strong. Of course if this happens the camera does not look pretty anymore and at best can't take a wide angle lens cause you cracked the mount.

How many times have you ran around a party with just a helmet camera? :S Wait perhaps that is just me?

Edit: made a tad more group friendly
