laptop for camera use

Recommended Posts

I've long been a pc user, and the more I mess around with hardware/software etcetc I feel like maybe trying out a mac for a laptop. What type of laptop do you guys use for camera work? how do you find the editing packages between the two platforms? I'm guessing it'll need to be fairly fast to deal with the uncompressing and rendering of the avchd codecs

I may be biased but I can not stand software packages that come with the laptops.

I wish they would stop selling me all the bullshit and let me buy ONLY what I want.
(of course, I could build and stop whining)

I have a shitty little averatec that I use. My 1st laptop. I will never buy anything from them again as they do not support their hardware. My driver was corrupted for my cd/dvd burner now it is useless and I have to use an external.

I looked at other laptops etc but I decided to wait. the averatec is SMALL and I like it.

All the bundles that come on WINDOWS machines bother me. All I want is the OS, premeire, PS and a burning program to start with.
Its a Pain in the ass most of the time to get all of those other program off the machine. they just clutter the thing up.

(maybe there's an easy way to do it but I don't know how)

I want to check out a MAC but I am afraid to have to try to relearn everything I know.

If I knew someone with a Mac I could check it out and get a feel for it but I don't so I will stick with MS.

sheeiiittt, JT. You shoulda just asked. I had my Mac sitting 30' away from you. but I mostly run bootcamp/windows anyway.

If you buy any computer on the PC side, I recommend wiping the drive and reinstalling only the OS, and then put the apps on that you want.
For DZ purposes, I need:
Sony Vegas
Lightroom
Photoshop
Nero
I rarely use Nero, but do have it for those weird moments I can't burn with Windows tools.

On the mac side:
FCP 6
Motion
Panasonic AVC Decoder
P2 reader
Photoshop
Lightroom
Toast
DVD Studio Pro

I need more software on the Mac side because the tools don't come with all the features I need.

I have both the built in burner and an external burner. When using the PC side, i can burn two independent discs at once, ie; stills burning while DVD is burning. Can't do that yet on the Apple side.
[forgot to add, I also have a 500GB drive that I use for the year, and just bought my2008 season drive yesterday. Depending on whether I'm using my MacBook or desktop at the DZ, it's connected via Firewire or USB2]

I'm not using AVCHD yet, I do use HDV sometimes but I generally work with SD. Tandemvideos, daily videos, event videos. I use a laptop with a decent graphics card, 2 gb ram, dual core processor (intel over amd), external harddrive, preferable a 17" widescreen, for software I use premiere pro for editing, rendering and burning dvds and I use nero for burning photos to cd.

There IS an easy way ... it's what I do everytime I purchase a new computer. Format the HD and install a fresh, vanilla, copy of the OS (windows XP Pro not VISTA!) without all of the crap the vendors include. Then install only the application that you want.

I use a Dell Inspiron 700m. It handles Photoshop and Premiere nicely.

haha what an absolute mess vista turned out to be, I dont know any one that wants to touch it with a ten foot poll, though they load it on pretty much every new computer now so you'd have to wipe it anyway

DSE, I'm guessing bootcamp lets you dual boot from a windows os to leopard? Now that macbook's have the intel processors in it. did you upgrade all the way to 4 gigs or just to 2?

My macbook has XP on it, but now that I'm pretty happy with Vista, I'm probably going to put Vista on it. I have 4GB.
I'm now running Vista very happily on a couple of machines, plus 30 training laptops.
My Macbook is divided at 50% for the drives/OS systems, and most of my storage is on external drives so that they're easy to access from either system. Parallels won't work for most of what I do, as it's too slow for video use; otherwise I'd be running Parallels, too.

Yea I just basically uninstalled/removed all the other bullshit. Since I didn't have a disc and I don't know how to make a boot disc for my OS I just had to manually remove all the crap.

The shitty thing is that most laptops that I have seen don't come with the DISC but just the key for the OS so reformatting is difficult for tards, like me.

I'm sure I could figure it out but Imm still too nervous that I'll fuck up my million dollar laptop.
