freebird185 0 #1 June 11, 2003 I need a smaller container, because a 150 is just not meant to go into a container made for a 210 for freeflying (a premature deployment finally made me decide to part with 2 grand). So this weekend I tried a used container that usually fits a 120. I'm not about to fly a 120 yet (call me old fashion), so we switched our packed canopies. So this means that I had a 150 cobalt packed in a D-bag made for a 210 stuffed into a small Javelin container, and I had an ugly opening. So my question is do you think that the odd combination of gear had anything to do with the ugly opening? Points to consider. I believe my body position was good. I've had at least 200 jumps on the cobalt, so I've worked through the canopy packing sensitivity. Squeezing the canopy may have messed up the symmetry on the pack job.If we trained monkeys to pack, would you jump their pack jobs?

PurpleBadger 0 #5 June 11, 2003 you have my respect on the packing, I get a Sabre2 135 into my NJ and that's tight enough! I'll leave the reasons for the opening to the guys that will actually know Dave p.s. how come you didn't have the D-Bag? it's part of the container - so if you are looking to buy it then you should get that also. freebird185 0 #6 June 11, 2003 Ugly opening - it opened very fast with asymmetric inflation resulting in one line twist that cleared, all while spinning. (Ugly) I've had even uglier openings on my cobalt, but for the most part it opens fine. The used javelin was an incomplete rig. It didn't come with D-bag, risers, or pilot chute. Thus, I had to use my ultra large d-bag.If we trained monkeys to pack, would you jump their pack jobs?
mwabd1 0 #7 June 11, 2003 I think that I read it right........you used the deployment bag out of your container (whatever it is) and used it in a much smaller javalin. That might of had something to do with it........I hereby reject your reality and instead choose to insert my own!
Watcher 0 #8 June 12, 2003 That could easily create a terrible opening (or it could come out just fine) you are kinda rolling the dice. If you want the rig (and it better be cheap since he is shorting you $70 for the risers, $120 for the Dbag and PC So it better be like 200 less than the exact same rig with those things, If its a used NJ, pre odyssey, I would expect $600 maybe 700 for it if its in good condition. However I can sell you a Javelin NJ with Risers,Dbag, and PC for $450, and it has new tuck tabs and a new BOC pouch Good luck getting that 150 into an NJ, as mentioned above the 135 Sabre is ass tight, the 150 eeek, I would not want to pack it. Specially a cobalt that seems to pack alittle large anyways. --Jonathan Bartlett D-24876 AFF-I
aneblett 0 #9 June 12, 2003 In a word yes! A D-bag can be too big. At my Dz there are several people that jump with D-bags that are bigger than what was intended initially for their containers. Both of them deploy fine most of the time. Last year though one of those people had 3 reserve rides in like a month. Finally tired of it he sent everything to PD who looked at it and determined that it was a combination of his too big d-bag and out of trim lines that was causing him his issue. He was only flying a Sabre 210. My guess is that on an elliptical more unstable canopy that his situationss could have been a lot more ugly. The D-bag should come with the rig and if you are buying one that doesn't come with make sure you subtract the price from the rig cause you are gonna have to get your rigger to make you one or order one from the container manufacturer.
