SuperKat 0 #1 August 9, 2008 If a camera has a max ISO with best quality setting of 1600, is that good or bad? I thought the lower the setting the better the quality. Thanks in advance for your help. pbwing 0 #2 August 9, 2008 Hmm. I wouldn't think that the lowest setting that a camera would have would be 1600 - I'm guessing that would be the highest. The lowest is probably 100 or 200. Higher ISO equivalent will give you a grainer image, but the sensor is much more light sensitive. So there is a trade off. Most skydiving shots are shot 100, 200 or 400 - I would guess... What type of camera are you looking at??
SuperKat 0 #3 August 9, 2008 a few models. Mostly narrowing it down to Nikon and Canon. I will give you the specific models when I narrow down my list. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
BMFin 0 #4 August 9, 2008 Some of the high end cameras offer ISO settings from 50 to 25.000 (and more) The more ISO sensitivity you shoot with, the more noise you will get. (the amount of noise depends on the camera in use) The more expensive Nikon models have the reputation of producing less noice even on high ISO values compared to canon cameras. On this area Nikon performs better, but there are lots of other things to consider when comparing different manufacturers and models..
PhreeZone 20 #5 August 9, 2008 Higher ISO means more sensitivity to light but it comes at the price of a higher noise level. The noise appears as grain during the photos. I've only had to go with 1600 ISO one time skydiving, that was on a "sunset" tandem that I wanted to keep the shutter upwards of 500 and the apature around 9.0. Only way to get those settings was to boost the ISO. Next time I'd just look at a flash but that is not an option currently.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
PhreeZone 20 #6 August 9, 2008 The D3 will go insanely high on its ISO with a low noise tatio but its also WAY outside a budget or intro photographers range. Nikon does have the advantage here over Canon for now.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
LouDiamond 1 #7 August 9, 2008 As an example,my 5D has an ISO range from 50-3200 which allows me to shoot in very low light conditions. However, keep in mind that what ISO denotes is how sensitive the image sensor is to the amount of light present. The higher the ISO, the more sensitive the image sensor and therefore the possibility to take pictures in low-light situations. Unless you take pictures in very low light conditions, you will probably never have a need to shoot at a high ISO. A camera with a 1600 max ISO will serve most people just fine for skydiving. ISO speed affects the shutter speed / aperture combinations you can use to obtain correct exposure and as mentioned, cranking up the ISO will add noise to your pictures."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
dragon2 2 #8 August 9, 2008 What you probsbly want for jumping is an auto-iso option that lets you set a max iso. I shoot at iso 100 on auto up to 400 iso, so i can take pictures in the plane without using the pop-up flash if I want to take pics without anyone knowing An auto iso option without a user-settable max is useless imo so check that. ciel bleu, Saskia
