Filter question

[Amature Warning]

Hi : I've just bought a Sigma 10-20 EX lens and need to protect it with a filter (?).

It takes a 77mm but that's all I know.

  • What sort of filter should I get?
  • Are some better (quality) than others? (Sigma = £55 whilst a Hoya = £23) Will I be able to tell the difference?

    Cheers,
    Tony

If you are going to protect it then only use a UV filter, polerizers or anything else is advanced items to add on once you get photography into your blood ;). And yes, there is a difference in quality of filters but the lens manufactors are not always the best. In my experience the B+W brand is very good in the UV line and the Hoya is a lower quality level but if you are looking at red filters for Black and White then the Hoya is a decent brand.

Go with the UV - to adjust a polarizer correctly, you need to be looking through the viewfinder as you do it, and you'd have to say in the same relative position in regards to the sun.
