Why are you needing the sliding travel ability?

I have my thoughts on Quick releases, I use Really Right Stuff clamps on my helmet. Pricey but SOOOOO worth it once you start getting into ground photography also.

I'm in the market for a couple of mounts, one video and one still for a Mantle. I thought that the ability to adjust one of those mounts would come in handy when trying to deal with the side by side configuration.
The still will be my XTi when I finally put it up there. I agree, a couple of RRS mounts, one with an "L" bracket would be the ideal setup. RRS is apparently the RRS but it's also RRE(xpensive). I'm hemorrhaging cash at the moment and looking to plug the wound, or at the very least, slow the bleeding.

I have several of the Bogen mounts/plates. Not realy good for what you're wanting to do, and they're snagpoints, no doubt. Cheap...hard to lay the catch down on a flat surface and maintain integrity, but they *do* work.
I'd be looking at a Schumacher or other sort of camera mount were I you

When just getting into this aspect of the sport the low profile, single point security mounts that you mention seem to be the way to go. But when you read this forum for a while and people bring up the sloppiness of those mounts and the benefits of compression, then I tend to lean towards the alternatives. My cameras are small(er) so I'm willing to bet that a goldmember, schumacher, or stroboframe would be just fine. And actually I thought it might be fun to do some RW inside flying with two video cameras mounted 90 degrees to each other on a quick quad. I don't know. That's probably the way I'll end up going but I thought I'd pick some brains before I made the purchase. All opinions, insights, random smart-ass comments.....all welcome.

It's unfortunate that Bogen hasn't given RRS a run for their money with the 394 system, as it's somewhat similar in design, and if Bogen jumped on that bandwagon, competition would likely force the price of the RRS product down.

RRS is rare here, most people have either a Manfrotto (Bogen) 394 or the one with the little red triangles (can't remember the name, Item: L12485 @ paragear). My fav camera store does off a small selection of RSS stuff now but it is REALLY expensive even compared to Novoflex, Arca-swiss and Kirk [:/] I'd like an L-plate for my D2X but not for USD 250 >:(

The "red triangles" product is the StroboFrame, and for lightweight cameras, it's a pretty good product.
Over here, Arca-Swiss is horribly expensive, and the RRS stuff (mostly) fits with Arca-Swiss.
The 394 is cast metal vs RRS machined metal, but the concept/size/look is very similar. I don't know why Bogen doesn't go after that market. they're going after the higher end film market now with their new high-end CF tripods that hold heavier gear.
it would make sense, IMO, for them to go after the higher/mid level market that RRS owns. RRS is a very small company based out of Joe's Garage. Seriously.

On Saturday, during the climb to altitude, I discovered that one of the 'little red triangles' had broken off the stroboframe used for my CX12. I have no idea how that happened. Maybe the plastic got weak with age.
So, today I ordered an RRS replacement. It was more expensive than the stroboframe. But it looks like a quality product.
