What stills camera?

Recommended Posts

OK firstly...

I have used search extensively, and read A LOT of threads, but most of them are a couple of years old at least. I'm not sure what has changed.

Also I have a couple of other requirements.

OK, so I am being asked what I want for my birthday from the lady and folks, and mentioned the idea of a stills camera - to mount on my helmet eventually. I have a compact at the moment and have wanted a proper DSLR for a while so I can get some nice holiday snaps etc.

Now, I jump a Tonfly Fuego Pro, if you know it, and the camera would have to be mounted upside down on a plate in front of the flat part above my forehead... so it needs to be smallISH and lightISH (in SLR terms). (The mounting issue is to be discussed in another thread later).

Also, money is an issue - it will probably be second hand from Fleabay.

I use a CX7 with a Royal 0.5x lens, so will try getting away with the 18mm kit lens on the camera - good idea? Seems like I could manage it going on what other threads have been saying.

Been looking at 300D, 350D etc. Any suggestions as to which is smaller and which has the best bang for buck?

Don't flame me for posting this topic please! I know you've seen it 100 times :)

Cheers,

Tom

Well...if we've seen it a hundred times, maybe a search might yield some results?
The Canon Rebel series are very popular. For Tandems, the Canon G10 is pretty sweet. It's very small. Some folks use Nikon cameras, they're great too, although it's a tad more challenging to find some of the parts for the Nikons that you'll find for Canon cameras (armor, switches, etc).
All will fit on the front of the Fuego Pro.

I'd go with the 350 d Because it is the same size as a 300 d but better performance all around. Better resolution, more speed, buffer is faster. etc etc etc.......

Hi Tom

One camera that may possibly answer both questions in this thread in the Ricoh GX100 / 200.

It's a small compact that I have been using for tandems this season (GX100). It's not a DSLR and has it's cons, but it produces images that are more than good enough for tandems. I'll post a few here if anyone's interested and have posted some in the past.

The camera has a 24mm wide angle lens and can be used with a usb remote switch. I simply spliced a conceptus tongue switch to the Ricoh remote switch.

Produces about 2 frames per second 10mp (GX200 is 14mp I think). I use it in full manual but have used it in auto with good results.

It's a compact so it has a small sensor so there's a lot of noise above 200iso. I don't use it for 'sunset' tandems or when light is poor.

It's a good one to get started, costs about £250 from jessops and you don't have to buy a lens for it.

key thing is it's light as fcuk and very small. Would suit your setup.

See you one weekend at the DZ and I'll show you.

Nice on Kev, cheers!

Only thing is, I'm after a camera for taking non-skydiving photos (holiday snaps etc) first, to jump second.

It probably won't go on my head for a while yet, but I'd like to learn more about photography and get some nice shots when I'm out and about. I think I've exhausted the abilities of my Canon compact!

I'd love to have a look though! Cheers.
