Rawa for new cam-flyer?

Recommended Posts

Heya!

Kinda guess that the subject isn't really saying a lot...

I would like to go into camera flying... Mostly freeflying at the moment since that is what I am doing at the moment...

The Rawa Image thing is probadly the most used helmet for video on my local dz, so therefore I would also like one of those...

But the real question is... Is there any good alternatives to the Rawa, that I should check out before buying?

yes there are... my first camera helmet was a RAWA... it's a good camera helmet... I ended up "growing" out of it (I wanted to be able to do more with camera flying then I could with a side mount and a camera specific box) and transistioned to a Bonehead FTP.

your best bet to get an idea of what is available in regards to the different types/styles of helmets is to look at the gear then explore each of the manufacturers websites... then there isn't any reason you can't call them up if you don't have the expertise about a particular helmet at your home...

For top mount it doesn't matter

Which is one (more) advantage of top-mounts. I have had four different video cameras on my current top-mount helmet (plus brackets, flashes, stills, etc.), and am apt to put others on there as well. A good helmet should outlast any given camera or format.

I was in your shoes a few years ago. I went with a 2Kcomposites FF2. It's got a lot of features that the rawa didn't have. Those were the two helmets I was choosing between though.

The FF2 has a smoother box... no snag points and a smooth surface to deflect lines/risers compared to the rawa (which isn't bad). The rawa has the thumb screw prodruding from the bottom of the box. The FF2 uses a captive thumbscrew (it doesn't come off the helmet) under the helmet padding. Nothing to lose when you remove the camera. Maybe things have changed but when I was looking, there was no cutaway option for the rawa either. I wouldn't buy a camera helmet without a cutaway.

The FF3 can fit a wider range of cameras than the FF2, but I don't like it as much.

Do you like hot, wet dreams in the middle of the night? I do :$

A rawa is the way to go. A smooth, snag-free, tight fit on the head makes you go back to times of childhood. A secure chin cup, and custom camera/body frame that makes innovation shine clearly through the design. You cannot deny the simplistic design, wihtout all the hype. Buy and rawa, and live again!!!

[Caveat: I'm the least experienced guy on this thread.]

I always try to get the right tool for the job I'm doing. So one of the questions that raises is: "what are you going to use it for?" I think the helmet of choice might be different if you say "I want to learn to be a professional video guy" versus "I want to take point of view videos of my friends on the skydives we do just to hack around on and post to YouTube or Skydivingmovies.com."

I'm definitely in the second category. I used to fly a PC109, now have a CX7.

Given that combination (not professional and CX7 only), the flat top approach wasn't necessary, and created snag concerns that I didn't need. So I never really considered that.

I had considered a Rawa. However I ended up ordering a Tonfly with a top mount at the moment for use with my CX7. I've inspected a couple people's Tonflys (DSE's, for instance), and I can say that they are really well made helmets. Nothing against Rawa, they make a fine product. I just personally liked the Tonfly more.

FWIW.
