DHMonkey 0 #1 December 9, 2008 Has anyone had any experience flying with a Canon G9?? good or bad? How did you mount it etc... any info and or photos would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!!!
PharmerPhil 0 #2 December 9, 2008 If I'm not mistaken, I believe the G9 doesn't have a remote port or switch. So short of opening it up and doing a custom mod, how would you trigger the camera's shutter?
DHMonkey 0 #3 December 9, 2008 Ok thank you great info to know... i am new to the G9 and def new to jumping with a camera, thats exactly the sort of info i am looking for!! So there would no real way to your knowledge to make the G9 work in a helmet mounted scenario?? How about the new G10? i think i read something about that possibly having a remote port... thanks again.
PharmerPhil 0 #4 December 9, 2008 I don't know about the G10, but you will find that most of the all-in-one digital cameras are not suitable for skydiving without modifying them to accept a port for a remote shutter release. That is why my camera flyers use DSLR cameras. Additionally, if your profile is correct, most people on this forum would not recommend you even consider jumping with a camera until you have a lot more experience for a whole host of reasons. A search of this forum will show this to be a recurring discussion, and may give you more insight as to why, or at least read the first Q&A in the stickie at the top of this forum. DHMonkey 0 #5 December 9, 2008 ...Thanks Phil, i have read it and i understand the reasons. Just looking at purchasing a G9 or G10 for NUMEROUS other reasons and was just hoping that in the near future it could be possibly adapted for use in a skydiving application... as i would love to get into shooting stills and eventually video. Of course a DSLR is the best option but the Canon G9/10 is truly an amazing camera for what it is and the size makes it very appealing to me for a considerably low weight/profile option for a helmet scenario, especially for a beginner. Not to mention a FRACTION of the price of a DSLR!! Thank you for your info and concerns.

Thank you for your info and concerns. hrm... a G10 can be purchased for $430 at amazon whereas an XS can be had for $460... and I couldn't find anything on G10 Specification page that indicated the G10 had a remote shutter release. I'm not saying it isn't possible to make this or any other Point and Shoot camera functional for freefall... it's just there is a reason that most camera flyers use dSLRs...Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... drudchen 0 #7 December 9, 2008 G10 does indeed have a standard 2.5mm remote shutter release port. I've made a few jumps with it. But as far as I know G9 doesn't. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3387180;
