PharmerPhil 0 #1 January 15, 2009 There have been a lot of discussions regarding shake in recent OIS cameras, with opinions about its acceptability from both sides. I would like it if people could chime in on what lens they are using, and whether they deem optical image stabilization acceptable or not with that lens/camera combo. It occurred to me that the objections (or lack thereof) to camera shake using OIS could be related to how wide an angle lens the flyer is using. i.e., with some of these extreme wide-angle lenses, the shake might not be as objectionable as it is using a slightly longer lens. Personally, I use either a 0.45x or 0.5x lens, and I like using EIS on several cameras, and disliked previous iterations of OIS (DCR-900). But I haven't used any newer OIS cams in freefall. P.S. This comes up in many different posts, but thought it deserved it's own post.
skydiverton2 0 #2 January 15, 2009 Problem is that with OIS something is moving in the camera. Due to the mass of this part it will only work for a certain (low) frequency. Higher level vibration will shake this mass unless this mass is suspended with a stiff frame. remember that we are using these cameras in an environment much more demanding than where they are designed for, temperature, moist and vibration wiseUsing your droque to gain stability is a bad habid. . . Also in case you jump a sport rig!!!
garywainwright 0 #3 January 15, 2009 Not sure if this is on topic or not? On my old TRV70 that I only used for 4 way last year, I had to turn the EIS off when used with a Royal 0.3 otherwise the image was too shaky. A bit odd as this is an EIS camera as far as I know?http://www.garywainwright.co.uk Instagram gary_wainwright_uk
mccordia 74 #4 January 15, 2009 I do a lot of shooting without wide-angle, some zoomed in quite a bit, and the stuff Ive seen from OIS makes me pretty sure it will be un-acceptable for what I want to do with it (on Wingsuit/Freefly/misc jumps) EIS (depending on camera models) can do some nice things for a shot, or actually make shaking worse.. I think I prefer using none of the above...JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?
