Hazarrd 1 #1 June 24, 2003 I am looking into getting a used rig right now and I believe I have found a good rig to get. It is a Javelin J2 with a PD160 Reserve in it. The previous owner was using a PISA Hornet 170 in it before however I am going to buy it without the main. Sunpath's website says the container will hold a Zero P up to 150. However, I am not experienced enough right now for a 150. I'd really like to get this rig and put a 170 in it. What do you guys think about this? I have been told that it's very common to do this because I won't be with the 170 for too long anyways. But I just want to make sure that there won't be any major problems. Thanks! .-. betzilla 56 #2 June 24, 2003 AS far as I know (I'm not a rigger yet, but get this question and similar ones a lot in the gear store where I work), there's no safety issue there, but it will be a bitch to pack...
steve1 5 #3 June 24, 2003 I almost didn't buy my Javelin J-2 because a 170 wasn't supposed to fit in it. Actually my Hornet 170 fits into it nicely. It's easy to pack up. A hornet might pack up slightly smaller than other 170's but, I'd say buy it.....Steve1
rigging65 0 #4 June 24, 2003 You should have no problem getting a 170 into a J2. Mfgs. are notorious for under-stating the size of their rigs so no one complains about it being "too tight". We have several people putting 170s into J1s with no problems. "...and once you had tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward. For there you have been, and there you long to return..."
SLOfreefall 0 #5 June 24, 2003 I own a Javelin J2 and pack a Sabre 170 into it. Perhaps it is tight, but I haven't had any problems getting it in there. I also have a PD160R in there as well.
pimpin8ez 0 #6 October 13, 2004 This is an old thread, so I thought I would try to get some new replies... My situation is exactly the same as the top post. I am looking at a J2 with a Raven 181MZ R. I want to put a Sabre 170 in it. Anyone using this combination? Too tight? "I poop too much...and then I get tired." -Beavis
meltdown 0 #7 October 13, 2004 I can pack a Spectre 170 in my J2. Not sure how that compares to a Sabre volume-wise.
Dazzle 0 #8 October 14, 2004 I was under the impression that a J1 took a 150 and would therefore assume a J2 would take a 170. My old J1 took a stiletto 150 fine and before that a merit (semi zp) 170 fine as well.
wuffo 1 #9 October 14, 2004 The J1 is sized for a zp 150. The J2, if I'm not mistaken, is sized for the same main but larger reserve than J1. So, since people are saying they fit a 170 into it, I suppose if you adjust the closing loop to fit, you can make it work. It probably won't be any more than a cosmetic issue (container flaps not fitting as designed, etc.) Besides that, we could all use a little more exercise, right? SSkydiver 0 #10 October 16, 2004 Hey Pimp, I have a Javelin J2 with a 181 reserve and a Sabre2 main. Its a little tight but works just fine. Sabre2 has about 150 jumps on it so its still a little slippery and its a bitch to get in the bag.
skybytch 273 #11 October 17, 2004 QuoteAnyone using this combination? Too tight? Sunpath used to say the J2 was sized for a PD160R/Raven 181-M/Tempo 170 reserve and up to a 150 sq ft zp main. I know quite a few people who've put 170 sq ft zp mains in J2's, with varying degrees of success. Canopies pack "bigger" in drier environments. Packing a 170 into a J2 in the desert won't be much fun but packing the same combo in Florida wouldn't be too bad. Also depends on the age of the canopy. One with a bunch of jumps on it is going to pack smaller than a brand new one. I'd suggest packing the Sabre 170 you have into someone's J2 and find out for yourself if it's going to be too tight/too hard to pack.
