Sony DCR-SR220

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!!

I normally jump with a PC-1000, but I’m having problems with it lately, so as a surprise for Valentine’s Day I got a Sony DCR-SR220. It is a sweet video camera with 60GB and 41 hours of recording, as well as it has memory S. and Steady Shot and the S.Pics are very good. It is a nice and good camera, but I would like to know if someone of you used for Skydive and what do you think about it. I read online some comments about it, but I don’t know anyone who used yet.

Thank you. Blue skies,

Ish

I called Sony and I told them about my intentions on the camera’s use. They told me as you said, that they don’t recommend taking a HHD camera above 10K only if you use the HHD to record, but that I can use it using the memory stick to record on it instead. I don’t know if it is true or not. That’s why she bought the camera for me with full cover including drops, etc.

I always can return the camera within 90 days, that’s why I am asking if someone used before.

Thanks for your reply.

Blue skies,

Ish.

Here is the issue (Posted in an earlier thread).
If you power the camera up on the ground, it'll be fine, because the camera is below 10k.
If you power it up in the air, you will eventually damage the heads, because the heads are not parked, and they do spin up on power up, card inserted or not. They park after the spinup.
Sony Austin sent me a note about this a couple months ago, and I posted it at the time. Wording is better in that post. Typing from my PDA so its not easy to find the link.

Thanks for the reply. I guees I have only 2 options then; return the camera and buy a different one, or power it up on the ground which it will kill my battery every two jumps or so.

Question: What about power the camera up about let's say 8K? Do you think that will work?

Thanks and let me know if you find the link.

Blue skies,

Ish.

Thanks again, and yes I can search for the link myself but I thought that maybe you have it, sorry about that.

The problem is that I didn't bought the camera, it was a present, so I rather search a little more before return it. As a matter of fact I would like to find someone who could fix my PC-1000 because in my personal opinion, I repeat, in my personal opinion it is one of best cameras for the sport.

Blue skies,

Ish.

Return it. The SR series will cause you issues at some point due to the hard drives. If you want a Stranded Definition picture look at something like an HC96, if you want tape based HD you are looking at used only anymore. If you want HD solid state get a CX100.

Eric put it all in a nutshell for you! My friend just bought a cx100 for $599.00. Great little camera but solid state memory. You'll need hard drive space and editing software. DSE can fill you in on more detail than i can about editing and software .

PS fill out your profile please! We'll have a better understanding of your experience level and it will help you more. :)

Thank you velocityphoto. I will just try it out a couple of times before return it.

By the way my profile is there, I didn't put the number of jumps, because I will have to change it everyother day or at least every week. (I see people with over 5K jumps and the profile still saying 1200) About the years in the sport, I didn't say anything, because I don't know what to write (3 years with USPA? 10 years air force? 13 years total?) The profile doesn’t allow you to say much.

Thank you,

Blue skies,

Ish.

I wouldn't waist my time trying that camera ,i would just return it and save the headache. If you scratch it or something they are going to charge you, and you'll get screwed anyways. They may not even accept the return . Hard drives do not work in our environment and will give you the headache of your life.
