skyguy0521 0 #1 May 7, 2009 I'm just getting into shooting video seen as I just got my coach rating I would like to know what a good camera and helmet would be for some one to start with who has never flown a camera. I've been looking at a lot of sony pc 109,105,100 that kind of thing because there small but really got no clue.
PhreeZone 20 #2 May 7, 2009 The BSR's from the USPA refer to 200 jumps for jumping camera. The camera choice depends on a lot of factors, the biggest one is what is your end goal for the footage? Are you wanting WideScreen or 4:3 footage? High Def or standard def? If you want to use it as coaching footage the best idea is not to take it along and instead put all your energy into watching the student so you can properly debrief them. It really annoys me to see new coaches using a video camera to record their students instead of do a really good walk though and debrief post skydive.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
snafuhere 0 #3 May 7, 2009 109 is a good choice this has in/out fire-wire ports (on the dock) so you can copy from/to other camera you will need wide angle converter, in my opinion 0.3 will do for coaching https://www.facebook.com/1skydive/

Students i find love the extra video if it is available and if it wasnt a good tool/aid in teaching why do so many aff courses have video. Of course it is up to the instructor/coach to watch what is going on and to be able to walk it through as you put it but a picture/video sure shows a lot more. Good camera if you can get it is a pc330 or pc1000 of course finances permitting.Swooping, huh? I love that stuff ... all the flashing lights and wailing sirens ... it's very exciting! I video all my coach jumps. I debrief without video, then show the video and add to the debrief. Students don't believe their legs were on their butt until they see it on video. Seeing is believing. The video doesn't help on its own, but when added to a debrief, I bet the video is more helpful to the student than anything that comes out of the coach's mouth. PharmerPhil 0 #6 May 7, 2009 QuoteThe BSR's from the USPA refer to 200 jumps for jumping camera. Unfortunately, the USPA allows people to coach at less than 200 jumps (maybe a different thread). But IMHO, either coaching or videoing can be very demanding, and combining the two jobs at this low a jump number is bordering on negligence. If you want to jump camera, wait a while and start by doing outside camera. Once you have that somewhat mastered, and once you have coaching mastered (believe me you don't yet), then you should consider combining the two. Starting to jump camera on a jump where your primary responsibility is the student, is just idiocy.
PhreeZone 20 #7 May 7, 2009 There is a difference between this style of debriefing and what I have seen other new coaches trying to do. The coaches primary responsibility is to be watching their student for debriefing, not doing things like making sure the student was in the video. I've seen many coaches get lazy when they have a camera and not pay close attention to the minor details on the skydive like they would have with out a camera there. I had started to fall into that trap also despite the whole "I'll pretend like it is not there" that I kept trying to tell myself. Only now that I've got a lot more experience on instructional jumps would I consider adding a camera back to compliment my debriefs, not replace them. Using a camera early in your instructional career sets you up to be behind the curve if you ever want to get higher ratings like AFF where in the course you are expected to be able to debrief at a very high level of detail with out having the benefit of video to assist you. Learning the body scan techniques from coaching jumps is critical for those jumps.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
Icon134 0 #8 May 7, 2009 I agree with both of you that jumping with a camera on coach jumps can be misused but can also be used well... When I was coached as an upjumper I worked with a very experienced jumper (AFF-I, TI, Master rigger, etc...) for my coaching... and his approach was very effective... and he did jump with a video camera... but it was how he used the video that was most important. upon landing we would sit down and debrief the dive... first I would tell him what went on in the dive, then he would tell me what he saw, and then we would go back and watch the video... I learned a lot relatively quickly because I was able to see what I was doing wrong but also was able to see what I was doing right... there is a right and wrong way to use video during coach jumps... if you "need" it to be able to debrief the student effectively... then more time should be spent concentrating on the skydive itself and less should be spent worrying about having a camera on your head... and at that point it should be left on the ground.
