HC5 vibration problem

Recommended Posts

I’ve just bought a Sony HC5 and made several jumps with this camera. However, I have noticed some vibration during the jump (most of them at the end). I am shutting with next configuration: Steady-shot, Sport and Infinite Focus. Does anyone had this kind of problem? Any ideas of how to resolve the problem? I’ve tried to shoot in DV format (non-HD) and the result was a bit better (less vibration)…. Could this be some kind of problem regarding steady-shot in HD?

I've had the same problem. The SteadyShot on the HC5 is definitely not as good as the SteadyShot on the HC1. Make sure your helmet is relatively aerodynamic and make sure your mounts are good (i.e. go with Liquid over Goldmember.)

I've shot both and haven't noticed a difference in the IS. Not to say it isn't there, but my first suspicion would be the mounting of the cameras. Both of mine were hard-mounted. i.e., no quick-release.

I thought the purpose of buying an HC5 (or HC1 or 3) was because we want to turn the image stabilization off, something the HC5 and earlier models allow for since it's electronic (vs. the optical stabilization of the HC 7 and 9). I turn steady shot off and use infinite focus. I've been happy with this setup so far.

With so many variables...it's impossible to pinpoint each instance on the internet.
-Mounting systems
-Helmet burble
-flying style
-chincup/no chincup
-parts on camera not secured
-parts on helmet not secured
-loose element in the wide angle
-loose thread on the wide angle
-internal lens cover being hit by air
-connector door flapping
-charger cover flapping
-strap fluttering
-single screw/no locking screw holding cam in place
-other 'thing' on helmet causing vibration
-loose internal lens
-slow shutter due to personalized settings
-NLE that throws away a field or combines them improperly (will make stabilization appear to be off when it really isn't).

Lots of potentials to point fingers towards....
One person I've dealt with recently has an OIS cam, same one I was jumping for a season, and they have lots of stability issues. Well...turns out to be the NLE, not the camera. Took three fedexes of finished DVD, raw MPEG files, and finally raw data to figure it out.
HTH.

The problem is about high frequency shaking that is not continuous, but happens in some point in the video. I have some experience shooting tandems and never had this kind of problem.

My comment to your issues (thanks for them):
-Mounting systems - Fast locking system with lots of hard tape. Maybe the weakest point.
-Helmet burble - Same helmet that I always used
-flying style - Belly (don't think is a problem)
-chincup/no chincup- Same helmet that I always used. No chincup
-parts on camera not secured - No
-parts on helmet not secured - No
-loose element in the wide angle - No
-loose thread on the wide angle- No
-internal lens cover being hit by air - Camera in top of helmet with no protection
-connector door flapping - No
-charger cover flapping - No
-strap fluttering - No
-single screw/no locking screw holding cam in place - Fast locking system with lots of hard tape
-other 'thing' on helmet causing vibration - No
-loose internal lens - The camera is new
-slow shutter due to personalized settings - No
-NLE that throws away a field or combines them improperly (will make stabilization appear to be off when it really isn't).

What can I say. The HC5 is beeing a bit of disapointment for me. Always used a PC7 (sidemounted) and didn't have any problem related to shaking.

Thanks for your help DSE. If you have any other ideas, please don't hesitate.

Could this have any thing related to the capture system?
