Video & Stills.

Recommended Posts

The DZ that I did my first 20 some jumps at charged 89 for video and another 25 to add stills.

The DZ I've been going to this year charges 65 for video, but doesn't offer stills.
Serious relationships turn into work after a few weeks and I already got a fucking job :)

Some DZs offer you the choice between video, video+stills or sometimes just stills is an option too, at our DZ it's a full package - video+stills only. This is all outside video. I heard of some DZs offering handcam video whee you may get a few "stills" (video screengrabs, usually) for free as a bonus.

Like Dragon2 said.

The theory is some people only want/can afford video.

At Monroe they offered a choice, we took stills regardless and 90+% of the time they ended up getting the stills anyway for an extra $15.

It's up to the DZO. Is there a better option or not....its all up to the student. What they can afford or are willing to pay.

I don't think there should be an option. Either you get whole package or nothing at all. imho

I agree, both.

You can't hang a video on the wall.

Yeah but can hang the DVD from you rear view mirror!:D:D

Interesting...I just noticed our DZ's policy on it for the first time the other day.

Apparently, our DZ only offers video - still are 'complimentary', and there's a sign in the office informing tandem students of that (i.e., if the video fails, you get your money back. But if the stills fail, sorry, you're out of luck.)

I thought it was an interesting approach - haven't seen it anywhere else in particular. Nor have I ever shot tandem video/stills, so someone else can probably give a more certain answer as to the reasoning behind it.

If the stills fail he wont have to reimburse them any $ since they didn't pay for them in the first place.

Yeah, it's obvious that this protects the DZO from reimbursing for stills should they not come out. I suppose I should have clarified -

Having never shot stills/video for a tandem, I have no idea if the stills fail more often than video, so I'm not sure of the justification behind this sort of arrangement...

Ugh, had a tandempassenger today who's hubby demanded reimbursement for me not having filmed/photographed the tandem landing, this was due to me having a half inflated Vengeance with a few line-overs and subsequent reserve ride and way way way out landing.

I think I would have no problem appologizing and refunding the full cost but they wouldn't leave with any of the video or stills either.:S

"demands" and dropzones simply do NOT go together....

especially if the demand is from some whuffo...

further evidence that the "general public" often views us as a "place where they can "buy a skydive"....

Charge card handy????
well the the sky's the limit...
"I'll have a couple of tandems for my wife and her friend,,,", and "oh yes, we want a turbulance -free ride to altitude, we want a perfect spot, No dizziness or upset ( vertigo nausea etc ) for the student, we want a spot -on -target landing, best to be sure it's standing... Get video of EVERYthing said or done by "the star of the show", and get the landing and the part afterwards, where my wife tells me how great it was"...and how i'm such a Dear for buying it for her....
"Oh ,,??? you say the cameraperson had a cutaway, and landed out??? " So" ????

i bet No words of concern were mentioned...
"Is she OK??" "did someone go to pick her up"?

no understanding of a reserve ride ..
" so THEN ?? WHERE was the video person???

No.... Only,
"Breach of contract.. i want a refund..."

screw 'em.... those sort of folks just bug the hell outta me...

I've often said,,,,
NO video at ALL on a first jump....
Want a video??? come back and do a second tandem!!!.. That's One way to increase the number of T 2's that a Dz might do...
hell i had 1500 jumps before i ever even saw a photo of myself on a skydive, let alone a damn video with soundtrack and interview, and top notch footage,, all mixed and ready, within 30 minutes of landing......

one of the reasons, i would rather pay my own slot and video a fun jump with friends, than shoot a tandem student....

Man.. guess i'm getting jaded, in my old age,,,

pardon me...

Or one way to sell a hell of a lot fewer videos.

Agreed, not to mention you can never do another "First Skydive" so if you miss it you can never get it back.[:/]

Here's our policy:

Due to the special skills and equipment necessary, still pictures are only available at the discretion of the freefall photographer. We do not offer a “stills only” package. If you happen to get a photographer that can take still pictures of your jump, your video DVD may include a “slide show” of low-resolution proofs of any still pictures that come out. An order blank for high-resolution prints will be included with your DVD.

Almost nobody follows through with an order for prints, most seem to be quite satisfied with the slide show of 640x480 proofs on the DVD. When people have requested the hi-res raw digital photos I have been able to work it out so that I can give them a CD of hi-res JPG's in return for signed, stock-photo-specific, model releases.;) I think I have been able to make far more money this way as opposed to trying to sell prints. But that's just me ... and we are a very small C-182 DZ.

quite right....

I've been blasted MANY times before... about that idea...

"sell alot less videos"...

fact is it doesn't matter to Me,, very much, whether the club or DZO sells video...
I've Never been in it for the money, and less videos,, especially at a cessna DZ simply means MORE open slots, for fun jumpers,, solos ,
or H & P's , and less of the 'commandeering of the plane' by the tandem concession....

no offense meant to anyone,,, especially those who 'make a living' shooting videos...

skydiving existed just fine for ME, for 25 years BEFORE>> everyone who makes one damn jump, Needed to have a video of it..

i swear, better than 50 % of all people who DO make a jump, only do it, cause they can get the vid...

which i DO understand, is a motivational force helping to sell first jumps...
it's just that I disagree with alot of that premise...
skydiving was doin' just fine Before tandems and the related videos...
i suppose it's the way things evolve, but i still tend toward the 'primitive side'...

just the way i am......

Well, I think you don't have to worry about offending too many out there :P The number of people that can 'make a living' shooting tandem videos can't be very large at all.

The best way to 'sell a lot less videos' AND do some good for the DZ is to charge more for the videos. Everybody wins that way B|

No blasting from me. I respect your views on this the same way I respect people who prefer to listen to music on vinyl instead of from a file on their computer. Some folks I know still don't like fuel injected engines and prefer the carbs they learned with.

It is not uncommon for a group of first timers to come out accompanied by someone who jumped in the past. It is always great to have someone I have zero chance of remembering approach me to thank me for the awesome video I did several months or years earlier.

I am sure some people watch them a few times and forget them but there are others that will never stop bringing it out from time to time to stir up those initial emotions. I know watching my first jump still stirs feelings in me that time tends to smooth away.

A man once told me "You can never do anything again. You can only do something similar."

I don't think video is necessary for a first jump but I think more will wish they had it than any who may wish they had not.

Our opinions just happen to differ.
Blue skies,
Robin
