Best work flow for using CX100 in Standard Definition mode in Final Cut Studio 2 (FCP 6.0.6)

Recommended Posts

I know that most people are using the CX100 to shoot HD footage, but for compatibility with an older project, I made the decision to shoot in Standard Def, and am now faced with a few work flow decisions.

The format is MPEG 1/2 for the standard def. It looks great played back in Videolan. Of course, Quicktime won't play it back natively, there's no sound. What a drag. So after trying many variations of codecs I decided that using photo-Jpeg at 95 % quality seemed to retain the best ratio of quality to file size. Unfortunately Final Cut doesn't do Real time render with this. Transcoding to DV format looks absolutely terrible. I used MPEG Streamclip for the transcoding and I'm not sure but I think I got the interlacing backwards, as the movement is a bit jerky, especially for a slow motion section.

Anyone else have a Workflow in place for using the CX100 in Standard Def mode that makes some sense?

Paul

You're not happy with MP4@10Mbps?
StreamClip can convert your SD-originated MPEG files to a 720 x 480 MP4 file, which is easily edited in FCS, MP4 is realtime.
What version of Quicktime? Quicktime should be playing back with sound, from an MPEG2/PCM audio source file.

Thanks for your response!

It's possible I didn't set the bit rate high enough in the MP4 test that I did, but I found that the contrast of the image increased using this codec and dark areas tended to lose detail. That's why I went to Photo JPEG. I am using QT Pro 7.6.4, but the sound in the SD files out of the CX100 is AAC not PCM, so once it's converted, yes it plays fine, but not in it's native format, unless there's a setting I can make in the camera...

It's actually AC3, but your converter may be reading as AAC. Most converters conform to an uncompressed format. Until a few moments ago, hadn't shot the CX in SD and transferred to Apple. Using handbrake, it converts properly to MP4 and opens in FCP as expected.
I don't have StreamClip on this machine, but will install it should you need more help.
