Cookie ROK with CX100

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to get camera set-up for 2010 and have been thinking about my options. I just got a Cookie Rok last season and would like to use that to build my camera set-up.

I've been looking at the CX-100 which looks really sweet and im wondering if anyone out there has it set up as a side mount on a ROK. I know it can be easily set up with a liquid flatlock on top, but I'm mostly into freeflying and would prefer it in a cookie box mounted to the side.

Any ideas, suggestions?

Since the Rok doesn't have a flat area on the side I think you're setting yourself up for snagging a line. You could bolt the box on there somehow but I wouldn't do it. Buy a helmet that's made for a side mount. Something like the 2KC FF3 or the Tonfly CC1.
Be safe.

A lot of freefliers these days are also moving to topmount so that's no excuse ;)

I'd reserve sidemount for when you really have to, ie AFF, student coach jumps. Topmount is better for you and your camera in just about any other situation :)

Cookie's helmets for side-mounting would be the MXV and Atomic. The Rok and Ozone are only made for top-mounting. So you would need to go with the MXV or Atomic if you wanted a Cookie helmet to side-mount the Cookie Blackbox for the CX100.

Quick question regarding side mounting with the Cookie Black Box for Cx-100.

Could I use the Flatlock mounted to the side of my Optik and the base plate on the side of the box?

Would like to also have a base plate on the bottom of the box and a flatlock on top of helmet so I can easily switch from side to top mounted.

I normally top mount a still camera, but when not shooting stills, would like video up top.

Thanks for the tips.

You can mount the Flatlock on the side...I'm just not sure how you would go about making it an easy switch from top to side or vice-versa...if you wanted the camera to shoot from a upright position. I'm sure it can be done, but it might take some extra parts/work to make it a workable swap.

Usually you would have the base of the camera connected to the flatlock/box, which works fine for the top-mount. But if you wanted the flatlock on the side, you would want the flatlock connected to the side of the box (not to the camera). Then you would secure the camera with a camera screw through the bottom of the box when side-mounted.

So unless you wanted to shoot sideways with the CX100, you would need separate mountings for the side and top to your box for the Flatlock plate, which would have to be moved each time.

Hope that makes sense...

Mike,

Maybe I wasn't clear in my 1st post.

I would have the black box with 2 mounting plates on it. One on the side and one on the bottom. The camera would be secured with the thumb screw from the bottom at all times. The camera would be in normal upright position at all times.

I would have 2 flatlocks on my Optik. One on the side and one on top. When not shooting stills on top, I could disconnect the box from the side and move it to the top.

My biggest question is if sidemounting the box with the flatlock would b a bad idea or what problems would exist?

Thanks.

Clint

The flatlock plate connects to a Blackbox via screws through the plate, box and into a threaded plate. I just tried inserting two of the threaded plates inside a Blackbox, and they do fit. You would need an extra threaded plate for the side.

As far as any problems, it's just that the box, when side-mounted with the Flatlock, would give you a 3/8" gap between the box and helmet...big line catcher. So not ideal.

Cookie has just released the Atomic helmet, with an inset quick release on the side, that would eliminate that issue and allow you to do what you are looking to do (without the gap). Although that doesn't help you with the Optik.

You might want to consider using a Zkulls (an inset mount) for the side-mount to keep it flush to the helmet and then the Flatlock for the top-mount. The Zkulls on the side would also give you more room for a HypEye D Pro hole.
