Problem with bottom Reserve Flap

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a used Javelin J2 that came with a Cypres and a PD160 Reserve. When I recieved it, I took it to my DZ to have it looked at. Approximately 10 people looked at it and they all said it was in great working order. I left it there for the week to get the reserve re-packed and make sure it was in good condition. When I got back to the DZ today to look at it, I was told by the rigger that the container has a problem. I was told that the lower reserve flap has too much extra material. The rigger showed me how the reserve pilot chute can be pulled out of the sides of the flap fairly easily. There is about a 1 inch gap on each side which definitely isn't good. I only have about 20 jumps, so I don't know what exaxtly the problem is. However, I want to know what anyone thinks about this. I just find it kind of odd that no one, including the rigger, noticed any problems before the re-pack. I don't have any pictures...but hopefully someone can help. Thanks!

Perhaps on your quest for knowledge, you will think it appropriate to return to your rigger, without an audience and go through the entire assembly and then repack it together. Perhaps you both will learn something.
Nowadays, those who make judgements, sometimes too quickly, might remember their training and go back to the beginning and start again.
The answer to your questions is in your hands.

Could be anything. It all depends on how long the cypres closing loop is and the bagging process. A 160reserve in a J2 sould fill up the container space adequately. Just talk to the rigger some more or find a master rigger and ask them what they think.

This sounds more like a packing problem than a gear problem. A Javelin loop should be 2 1/4" long, no matter what size. (According to Sunpath) The rigger can influence the way the canopy fills the container and make a longer loop seem tight with the top fuller than it should be. This may result in not enough material in the bottom and these loose corners. I also would expect a PD 160 to work in a J2. I HAVE refused to pack a Javelin that was under filled. It was a Tempo 170 in a J5.:S The safety stow (loking loop on the reserve bag for those who don't know) didn't have any tension on it the bag was so empty.
