Parafoil - slowing the opening?

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine recently got a Parafoil 252, and we both put some jumps on it. As a vertical accuracy canopy it performed GREAT...

As a canopy being opened at terminal, it was ranging from brisk to unreasonably hard.

Configuration:
30" zp pilot chute
stock split slider
break lines daisy-chained to set point
(also tried letting them out ~1")

Opened better when we tucked the outside cells into the center cell, then tight wrapped the nose 2 turns, but not enough.

Recommendations?

Anyone have experience with the optional "d" ring slider with sail?

Thanks,
Jim

There's a parafoil with this (or similar) setup at our club. I remember the girl who usually jumps it complaining about her openings being too slow, sometimes taking over 1000' and often requiring some pumping of the brakes. So I guess it helps.

A good option for good opennings in parafoils is to put two windows (20x30 cm) in 2 and 6 cell of the bottom skin and to close the internal cross-ports only in the ribs close to the windows.
My parafoils always has this applied and they have an opening type two stages openings.
The type or size of the slider in this case is not very important.
The better brake setings for openning is without braking for normal risers or like the normal risers for acuracy risers.
Theoretically to canopy it is also more pressurized in flight
Remember, the correct localization of the windows is very important, ask your rigger.

First of all, i'm way out of my depth here,

but i was listening to a conversation a while back between 2 accuracy jumps,
after a spanking on opening the advice given (if i recall correctly) was something about turning ? packing ? the slider upside down or something like that.

Am i making any sense here ? [:/]

Apologys in advance for any broken necks or backs. :P

I had 252 that opened pretty hard (large PC, split slider..). I was not able to get me the sail slider (we call it here kangaroo). So all I did was to roll the nose really tight and as much as I was able to do that. That solved a problem, openings were better.
About a sail slider, that will solve the problem, most of PF here have that setup. It is a "must have" here if you have hard opening PF (and most of them open hard) and you want to compete in acc.
