What do you pay for freefly coaching?

Recommended Posts

I've seen people spend their own money coaching others and I've also seen outrageous price gouging. I'd like to see what you guys think is fair.
How much have you paid for a freefly coach jump?
cover the slots? $100?
What do you think a fair price is for a quality coaching jump?
Please include the region you're in.

Sore subject with me (DZ politics)
but
I have paid world class jumpers to coach (Swanson, Fiala) and I do not regret the material I learned, slots + 25-35.
steep price is worth the following.
1. Famous the customer has preconceived notions of your skill and will feel the training might be worth the price.
2. Length of dirtdive/debrief and attention to the student.
3. video
4. Having an Air dolphin (freefly millenium award) or some other pedigree (competition/ big way record experience) that assures the customer that you have skills to teach.
Anything less than the above could possibly be obtained from making friends with budding freeflyers at your DZ for the cost of slots, down to just beer, or maybe nothing. (assuming there is a group of freefliers at your DZ).
The best coaching I ever had was when I had 80 jumps and an experienced freeflyer was too busy to teach me head down (I had $300) and for free, showed me how to do all the sit transitions, and told me to do as many solos as I could practicing those. In retrospect I was mad because I did not jump with him, but later when my transistions were better than all my friends I appreciate the short simple advice.
I have managed to avoid ever paying someone to coach me who did not have the items in 1-4. (total of 11 coach jumps in my short 600 jump career).
Everything else I learned from my friends :)ramon

Hi Goat
I only paid half the coach's slot for my freefly coach jumps. The DZ paid the other half. The guy coaching me (Tim Carter) is now a resident freefly and canopy control coach at Skydive Lake Wales. I have also got coaching off Brian Vacher (voted best camera-flyer at WAG in Spain by Omniskore) at the same price, ie only half his slot. So, world class coaching for the massive sum of £24 in total (including briefings, debriefings and video).
I don't know of too many other DZs that do this, but I know I have benefitted a lot from it.

Hey Goat,
I pay the Freedom of Flight School @ Deland $32 plus two slots. This is worth every penny - I have half the number of jumps with the people I jump with and I still kick ass :-) I attribute this from excellent coaching from Jimmy Tranter and Hunter Roberts from Deland as soon as I finished my AFF. Doing things this early makes all the difference.
If you are strapped for cash and people actively want to jump with you and you have the skills to cover thier need - then charge them over and above your slot cost. If you can continue to jump without thier contributions then don't charge them at all - if you are getting fun out of it and would do it anyway.
I jump in a small DZ in the UK with no freeflyers except absolute beginners. I charge my slot, plus £5. In return they get all the usual good quality coaching in safety, but it also allows me to do other things that benefit skydivers at the DZ in general.
This year I will be holding several freefly weekends where I'm preparing smeinar material to deliver to people that want to learn. I'm not charging for it, but what I do get from coaching I push back into the DZ so that we can all learn.
And yeah, I'm having fun!

The only coaching dive I ever paid for was slot+$10. Worth every cent and I got a lot out of it. I have jumped with the same guy several times for free on fun jumps or lurking him with other students and he gives just as good of a debrief with or without money....:)"I only have 133 jumps, so I don't know shit..right?"-Clay

Here's wat ya do:
1. Hang out with a rich chick who is from Fla. and is DYING to be on a freefly team.
2. Get your jump buddy to "join the team."
3. Name the team "Snatch Force"
4. Convince her of your teams desperate need for coaching in exotic locations.
5. Prepare to PARTY!!
Sick, but effective!
P.S. Hey Goat, see if you can't convince Rigga Jon to jump on the DZ.com bandwagon!

Tim is an excellent coach. So is Paulie (at Lake Wales now also) The most these guys ask for is slot + $5 (pack job) Which I think is just plain cool of them. They're basically teaching you for free - they're not getting anything in return for the thousands of $ they've spent getting as good as they are, the money they have in their camera equipment, gear, etc etc. I learned a lot more in one jump than I could in 10 solos. I can completely understand why some people charge you $20 - $30 + slot; be extremely grateful if you find someone willing to do it for just their slot.
Never argue with stupid people. They just drag you down 2 their level & beat you with experience

I may have picked up a slot a time or two but have never paid for a coach jump.
When I first started jumping I made freinds with the local freeflyers and picked up advice from them. They were cool enough to jump with me a few times and teach me all the basics on the ground. "They" being mostly Dusty Smith who's now at Elsinore. BIG UPS PIMP-D!!
Training for advanced skills like my AD rating has mostly come from the hundreds of 2ways I did with my teammate Raymond Adams. We learned most of our skills by using each other as a base.
I've been extremely lucky that I found someone to mentor me, and another to jump with me 500+ times.

Tell Deva looks like I not will be there this week.. ( Thursday, yeah guess not) ....a person from the office left yesterday stressed out - be back in a week or so - so i cant come this week - so maybe in a couple of weeks and I will be there either 2 or 4 days. Something like that.

Well M,
One cool dive to practice for the AD is to go out with a partner and face off. One person does a 360 transition while the other stays still acting as a base. The person completes the transition, adjusts his proximity making sure he is back on head level with the base person. He then points at the base person to switch and the roles are reversed. Do this with all the transitions 360, cartwheel, front/back flip.
You can also add docks between each transition instead of a finger point.

That's pretty cool I'm jealous.
Could you tell me how you were training for the AD rating and how you got it?
thanks

Aerohio usualy does extensive ground training. All my pre-jump courses were usually at least half an hour. If they're still doing that, it makes the $75 a whole lot more reasonable.
