Reserve Sizing for FreeFlying

Recommended Posts

After reading this months safety check I thought that I would open this subject up for debate. So, what do you think should be done about reserve sizing for freeflyers? Should we be gravitating toward rigs that are made for big reserves and small mains so if we have a reserve prematurely deploy or if we intentionally deploy our reserve at a high speed it will be less likely to blow up. Or should we be more worried about the possibility of having two out and the difference in sizes of the two canopies?
Just keep your mind open and suck in the experience. And if it hurts, you know what? It's probably worth it

Regardless of what type of flying you do, I think a reserve should be sized so you can safely land it in the worst case scenario. For me that would be into the worst possible landing area (a backyard complete with fence, pool and swing set for example).
The possibility of having two canopies out is valid, but if you have a Cypres and stay heads up about altitude awareness it seems to me that it's more likely you'll find yourself trying to land one canopy in a bad place than dealing with two canopies out.

What kind of wing loading are we talking about? I wouldn't doubt that there are people that think that they can safely land canopies that are loaded so that if they deploy at too a high speed they risk breaking a few lines or possibly blowing it up.
Don't mind me I'm just being the devil's advocate! ;)
