IS the FT-50 Altimeter good?

Recommended Posts

Advertisements do say that all repairs on the FT-50 need to be done in France. Its a French product.
If you live in the states you may want to consider that when buying an altimeter.
MAybe consider the Altimaster III Galaxy. Similar price. Very reliable. Goes up to 18,000 ft

We have sent FT-50's to PEC (Parachute Equipment Corporation) in New Jersey for repairs, and usually get them back within 2 weeks -- cost $25 plus shipping one way.

They seem to be pretty nice altimeters for the $$.

i bought a new one, it works perfectly. One thing to bear in mind is that it had a slightly domed face and might be slightly easier to scratch if placed face down.

Keep it clean and it'll work fine. i also recommend an audible. It's a good combination for me. I tend to anticipate my audible tone which makes me look at my wrist alti.

I've had one for about 6 years. Reads a little low at altitude.

..But that is better than high, don't you think. LOL

Mine reads about 400' low once above 6,000.' I brought it flying a couple of times and compared it to the aircraft altimeter to see where it was going wrong cuz it always ended up reading 0' on the ground. It hangs up a little at 2K and 6K...

I just set it to the right side of the 0 to make up for that hang up at 2K. Breakoff, pull, reserve altitudes are all below 6 anyway.

Mike,

400 feet may be out of manufacturer's tolerance for that altitude. I have an FT-50 calibration chart at work . . . I'll get back to you.

Meanwhile, you can check with the authorized dealer in the US, PEC

Because I train AFF and tandem students, the accuracy of my altimeters is critical. I have access to a chamber and calibrate mine every 90 days.

I have two FT-50's, and they both read almost dead on with the airplane's altimeter. I have noticed a lot of skydiving altimeters read a little low at higher altitudes, but mine seem to be quite accurate.

Man my goes to 24, to 36 the needle just keeps going around.
I took my FT50 to a high altitude jump, and worked perfectly

I bought an FT-50 after my Alti-III bit the dust. I have over 250 jumps on it and it's solid. I've banged it against the door and the plane more than once and it just keeps going.

The domed lens may be a bit more scratch-prone, but I wouldn't know. As soon as I got it, I put a clear rubber adhesive bumper on the center of the face and if I happen to lay it face-down it won't scratch.
