freeflir29 0 #1 June 27, 2003 So...it's the Goodtime Boogie IV here in Cleveland. Was out the other day doing various dives with mostly lower time jumpers. Then "The Crew" shows up. Dan, Dave, Mike, and Germ (DZ.commer) Dave organizes a 5 way Head Down with outside camera. Start it off with an Oppenheimer exit out of the Casa. Open it up, Bring all hands in and cheat to round. Break grips, and do this funky sorta open accordian. Sweet!!! I get invited!!! So....here we are at 13K. Exit is nice....very stable....open it up. Very nice...very smooth. Key to take grips for round. Cool...smooth.....start to open it up and WHAM!!!!!! I suddenly have air on my back which pushes me forward. I compensate....a little too hard...go back. Let go of grips trying not to funnel the entire damn thing. It did pretty much anyway. Flip out into sit and then spent the rest of the dive trying to get back. Which I did a horrible job of because I was all pissed off. Never got any closer than "outside video range" and that was sketchy with orbiting and general stupidness. Track away at break off thinking this jump is going so well I'll probably have a mal! Barrel roll.....clear....dump. Wow...it opened...nicely even....I'm suprised. Was MEGA pissed off during canopy ride. So much that I hooked WAY too high and came in at "student" speed. Walked around apologizing for FUCKING up the dive. Threw my crap down and didn't even pack. Went to sulk. However.....on review of the video much of my anger at myself for being such a bone head subsided. It seems "MOST" of the reason I "went stupid" wasn't all my fault. When we went to open to the round the general concensus was that we should have had 2 keys instead of one. 1st to bring hands back in for the grips. 2nd to actually open the round or just break grips totally and fly to round. Being that I had the LOWEST skill level on the dive I was LAST getting my grips. I really wasn't ready to open yet. As we opened there was some tension on my two grips which drug my upper body forward. Hence my rocking and eventual "flip out." I really had thought that I had just lost my mind and corked. Lessons learned......just like belly flying always drive towards the center when you have grips. It does have to be lighter with HD than belly flying though. If I had been closer in I wouldn't have gotten drug off axis. When organizing try to forsee things like the timing issue we had with opening up. 3 I reaffirmed that a Head Down 2 way in NO WAY prepares you for flying a slot on a bigger way. I'm getting better.....but I still have a long way to go. I guess I shouldn't be so hard on myself at only ~350 jumps but ya know....I wanna fly like I have 3500. Above all.....have fun...shit happens.....and THANKS to the high timers at CSPC for getting me such good experience. I'm a better skydiver than I was Wednesday because of you guys! Yoshi 0 #2 June 27, 2003 sounds like you had a good time... QuoteI reaffirmed that a Head Down 2 way in NO WAY prepares you for flying a slot on a bigger way I would say this is a little off though.. even solos will help you with big way flying. anything and everything you do will help you. thats just my thoughts though -yoshi_________________________________________ this space for rent. freeflir29 0 #3 June 29, 2003 Quoteanything and everything you do will help you. Sure...it can help but big way skills have to be developed SPECIFICALLY. Basically the skills to fly docked. Especially when both hands are in use on the docks and you have to be able to fly perfectly "still" with an even fall rate and perfectly straight down the column. I think you need at least a 3 way so you have varying fall rates etc. to really "learn" this stuff.

GeeeeeeFly 0 #5 July 2, 2003 Just curious... Why didn't you transition back to your head and rejoin the group in the accordion. Seems that from the story you were quick enough to realize the instability during your flight down the tube that you transitioned to sit to stay with the group but then it seemed as if you peeled from the group??? I have had similar problems in big ways on my head and I must say there isn't anything that a two way can't teach you. I would have to agree with the little green character from Elsinore...Don't forget the reason we do this... Way to be safe in the end...
