Voodoo and javelin

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I've got this question: is voodoo really the best conteiner for freeflying, or this is just an advertisment trick? I am planning to buy a new rig and think that voodoo looks cool. I now jump a javelin and like it a lot. it is very comfortable. How is voodoo? so this question is for people who jumped both, basicaly pros and cons vor both.
Thank you all in advance.

huh i don't jump either, but i've seen them both. And in my opinion voodoo is much safer for freeflying than voodoo.

Hell no! Mirage G4 is. ;)
First you have to ask yourself what does safest mean? Is that no bridle exposure, firmly tucked main flap and riser covers, and that it opens safely. In that case wings are just as safe as voodoo or mirage g4. But if safety means also that toggles can't be accidently released, hard housing in risers, secondary riser covers, legstraps stay where they are, chest strap stays tight until you release it,... then you quite fast get down to which container is safer.
I advise you to do the same with voodoo and javelin (since you asked about their difference) and you'll see which is safer. though you'll get different answers from all skydivers, it's your call to decide which is safer

For me, of those two, voodoo is safer, but the safest for me is mirage g4.

Of course it is! Ever since I've got one, my headdown skills have improved drastically and those nasty high speed premature openings are now a thing of the past.:P

Seriously, I may be a bit biased on this one, but I'd suggest the Voodoo over a Jav for faster delivery time and cooler design if nothing else. Also, compared to the few Javelins I've seen, the quality of workmanship seems somewhat better on my rig. Comfort-wise, you won't be disapointed with a custom made Voodoo harness.

As for safety, I like upward-tucking flap design much better than Javelins'. New ones are probably quite safe, but I've seen more than one older Jav with the pin cover flapping in the wind.
Much as I'd like to go on extolling the qualities of my rig over others, I honestly don't think there are that many. Most rigs you can get at the moment are, imo, more or less comparable, so the decision is usually based on minute details and personal preferences.
Hey, did I mention how much cooler that the Jav my Voodoo looks?:)

they are both great rigs. i have jumped both, and both are confortable. some may like the voodoo over the javelin, some like the javelin over the voodoo. me i prefur the javelin. RI just doesn't have there quality control tight enough for me.

i'm in a hurry, i'll post later today on why i made that comment.

I have had both rigs.

I currently jump a Voodoo.
I find that both rigs have their pro's and cons. The javelin was just the basic Javelin and had all the bells and whistles. I found the leg straps were not well designed with stainless steel. They would come lose during turns under canopy, where I would then use surf wax to help them grip again.
The Voodoo is nice and has the full articulation as well and is very comfortable. I had to get a custom to the different leg straps and closing was a lot more difficult.
Now that I have had this rig for a while I am very satisfied. I don't necessarily think it is the best free fly rig but it is different. I suggest trying these rigs out if you can, wear them and see which is more comfortable designed for what you want.
I think the Javelin Odyssey is nice but not what I was looking for in pin protection. Also I had problems with their riser flaps as well.
RI will gladly fix anything you have problems with and Sandy has even been nice enough to convert old Voodoos to new current upgrades.
Sandy set up my Voodoo to be velcroless after I asked him to modify the pull out which was currently velcro. He designed a new pull out after I asked him if it was possible...
Pretty cool if you ask me...

another question I've got is about odyssey. Do cutin laterals make such a significan difference?

I'd say no...but they're nice, especially if you have a big rig/small back. I personally like the way it makes the rig contour to your body (you can get them on a Voodoo as well), but I'll admit I got them only partially for the comfort and partially for the "cool new feature" value...(if it's available- why not!?)

My first rig was a Javelin purchased new.. my second a Voodoo also purchased new.. I will never buy another Javelin. I had a serious problem with mine that caused me once to land with brken lines and a second time to cut away a main with broken lines. My finger tips will forever bear the scars of the second one as the lines burned through my fingers after releasing fromt he snags on the container. Sun Path denied that it ever happened and sent me back the rig. I don't care if a company screws up once in a while but stand behind your product or lose a customer forever. They have definitely lost me forever.

RI, on the other hand, rocks. They are very communicative and responsive. And IMHO, the Voodoo looks nicer. It definitely stays closed better than the Javelin did and seems to be holding up better too.. And it's lined and easier to pack.. It's just nicer all the way around.

I would'nt think of getting any other container than an odyssey. The service at sunpath is unparalleled. It is super comfortable and totally safe. <<>> I have seen plenty of "safe and safest" rigs open in freefall. They are all prone to problems. There is nothing wrong with jevelins designs for freeflying. If any of the other containers were being produced when the early javs were, you'ld see problems with them too. <<< opinion over>>>

(you can get them on a Voodoo as well)

And a Wings.

Ok, which rig is better, well, the one the person you're asking just dropped over $1k on will be the best. That's the same with anything in life.

Both are good rigs, so are Wings, Vector Microns and Infinity. Pretty hard to go wrong with the actual big names right now (no jumpshack is not included in that list).

My husband had both a Jav and a Voodoo.

He says the Voodoo is the most comfy rig he has ever jumped.

Oh boy. Did I say that out loud. Don't anyone quote me...

I think you'll find everybody has a different experience with customer service. I freind of mine has had terrible time with sunpath. I have never had a problem. I guess it's who answers the phone that day.

i personally would reccomend a voodoo (or talon FS) just because thats what i jump and because sandy and goose taught me pretty much everything i know.

either way you (probably) wont be dissapointed with whatever rig you choose.
javelins are everywhere and everyone knows how to pack them.
Infinities are awesome and the reserves are so noice to pack
wings are comfy and everything that the javelin should be
Vectors are bulletproof but some feel like a brick (plus the new skyhook)
mirage, welll im pleading the fifth:ph34r::P

either way, check out all the different kinds and decide what YOU want, not somebody else

The biggest thing is to look at what protection is offered by the container, (riser, reserve pin, main pin, bridle, PC) IF it won't open unless you tell it to(pull), you'll have a safe rig

VooDoo is by far the BEST rig for freeflying. If you want to say hello to your riser and toggle in freefall. Even if you don't make it into the dive, you can look to your right and have a freidn with you. Hello Mr. Toggley. Won't you wrap around my arm today? I love you soooo much.
And then your have the Javelin. If minimal coverage is what your into and you think the nickname Unravelin Javelin is a compliment. Then the Javelin is cetaintly for you.
Bottom Line Is.......... Buy a quasar. Strong Enterprises Forever. You've jumped the rest, now jump the best!
