bertusgeert 1 #1 May 21, 2004 I know that tracking dives are considered freefly, but you do not need to be a great freeflier, or freeflier at to all to participate in a organized tracking dive right? What are important things to consider in a tracking dive? If I got 3 other people together, can we simply go on a tracking dive? (provided the spot is changed to accomodate this). The base does not have to backtrack, although if he is good and capable it is better that way. If I can track above and past the base, does this pose any danger to the rest of the people or the dive? That would be all thankyou. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei!
weegegirl 2 #2 May 21, 2004 I don't think you need to be a great freeflyer to go on an organized tracking dive. We do them quite frequently... it's a nice way to bring RW and Freeflyers together. And everyone should be up on their tracking skills. Best way to get started, is have a more experienced tracker/skydiver organize a few that you go on. Start off small. In my opinion, the most important thing you should do... is clear your airspace at the end of the dive. Especially on larger dives. Barrel Roll and make sure you know where everyone is before you dump. If the experience level on the dive varies, you may have a few straglers.
WrongWay 0 #3 May 21, 2004 You don't need to be a good freeflyer, but you (obviously, DUH!!!) need to know how to track. Tracking dives are usually pretty easy to organize, but I personally would suggest strongly against a tracking dive of all newbies. Get someone experienced to organize it and lead it, such as a local experienced freefly dude. Make sure it's someone that knows how to spot for a tracking dive (as you'll have to offset jumprun). Myself, I've lead a few tracking dives on my back, but I always make sure of two things. First off, I'll double check the spot with a person experienced with organizing tracking dives. The second is keeping someone above me. Since I'm on my back, I (naturally) can't see the ground. Also, I like having a nice, fast, shallow backtrack, so my head is pointed as if I'm looking up at the sky (making it difficult/impossible to see people following behind me). Therefore, I always pick one good tracker and tell them to stay directly above me to guide me and make sure we're headed toward the dropzone. Any time you participate on jumps with larger groups of people, Discipline is extremely important... Flying in a specific area of the formation, recognizing when you're not a part of the formation and breaking off early, breaking off in the right direction, clearing your air space, safely negotiating your airspace under canopy with all the other people, entering a pattern to land, and bringing your canopy to a stop... Actually flying in the track position is really easy. It's participating in a track jump where other factors come into play. All that aside, tracking is super fun! Practice your technique at the end of every single jump that you make and you'll dial it in wicked quick.

bertusgeert 1 #7 May 31, 2004 Finally got on a tracking dive with 9 others this weekend. It worked allright, except the base didnt really move that much at all, and I was stuggling to get down to him. Speed was not the problem. Everone was everywhere, but at waveoff I broke into a mad track, and accelerated above and further than the others who turned away, did my barrelroll and pulled. I now see how easily people can get in each others way! I gotta say that I am looking forward to many more tracking dives, it was super fun. --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei! I don't understand why you would do this. Do you do this just at the end of the jump to punch it out or during the entire track? Wouldn't be a fun track for me to lead if I can't see all the other people smiling back at me. D.J.

If there are really good trackers then somebody can be above me, smiling away and being like "WAZZUP!!!", and I'll keep it relatively shallow, but not insane. If there are newer jumpers on the dive tho, I'll keep my head facing them and only punch it out at the end.
