conquest 150

Recommended Posts

Hi.
I am hoping u cn give me some advise on the conquest 150. ( I have heard via these forums that it will collapse on u if u do front riser turns - Is this also true of a hornet or zp or any square canopy ??)
I am not planning on doing front riser turns at the moment and for a while yet anyways - my situation is that I am a low time jumper, weight 58\kg and am currently jumping a zp 170 (on Loan)
I purchased a rig with a 150 heatwave- ( i am cautious to try and move down to heatwave - even in 30-40 jumps) and have been offerred the 150 conquest in exchange for heatwave.

ur opinions will be greatly appreciated
thanks

The conquest is a good canopy, but you can't make turns and swoop in front risers because the canopy make "trembles and slaps" special in turbulent conditions .
In all other situations the canopy is reasonably good.

Hi I am jumping an SR-71 which was a Conquest built by PISA as a private label for Western Parachute Sales in Oregon. When I first tired out the canopy Ralph.. the owner told me... NO FRONT RISER TURNS.. in no uncertain turns. IT's a very conservative dropzone when it comes to HP landings. After buying the canopy I have put over 100 jumps on it and I love it. I have taken the canopy up high and tried some riser manuevers just to see what it will do. When I did try it on mine it wants to shudder and shake and have the nose curl up. The leading edge of the canopy does start to fold under if you hold a front riser AFTER it starts this. I also discovered a new flight characteristic yesterday by accident.. I like to spiral my canopy down to get a more fun ride. I have done this many times in the past but I did something different yesterday with it. I was at 2500 ft and went to full brakes.... taking me to very low forward speed... then let up the left toggle all the way while maintaining the right toggle at my waist. The canopy suddenly dove under me spinning to the right. As I fell towards the ground really fast I got 2 full line twists and when I came out of that dive I managed to kick out of the twists. I am really glad I discovered that little trick at 2500 ft... which when I checked my altimeter when the canopy was flying straight and level again.. was down to about 1800. Doing that lower would have been a very bad thing.

My Advise...its a good canopy.. packs well.. opens nice and soft ...I load it about 1.2 to 1 it flies well and lands me without killing me on no wind days( I am old and brittle and cant run as fast as I used to when I was in my 40's)It is a good ZP 9 cell canopy that AeroDyne built in the 90's. Its a little more tweaky than my Triathalon.
DEMO the canopy and try flying it up high where you can see how it flies... Spin it.. dive it... flare it and let it back up out of the flare... do that high because if you do it low it will dive at the ground... far more than my Triathalon will do.....ultimately its up to you

The conquest and the Heatwave are worlds apart. Even at the relativley low wing loading you propose, you should be avoiding heatwaves until you have at least 100 dives.

The conquest was built with an unusual construction allowing "checkerboard" designs. While this may be distinctive from the ground, it offers little advantage in the air. It's also an old design - having been released late in 1992. It does not enjoy front riser input, particularly if the brakes are not lengthened.

Who ever takes the heatwave off your hands should be paying in. PM me if you want more info. Let me know what DZ you're at and I'll give you the name of an I to speak to who's not involved in the sale.

Thanks tonto
I appreciate ur advise.
I would really like to get hold of a 150 Hornet canopy, but they seem hard to come by :( if you know of anybody that wants to sell one - please keep me in mind.

As mentioned earlier, I have loaned a 170 Zp canopy
but in 20-30 jumps am going to move down to 150 canopy.
