tertiary reserves?

Does anyone still use teriary reserves for CReW?

This question came up during a recent riggers' course.
I have not seen a tesh' in long time.

---------------------------------------------------------

We used them at the 1982 Nationals. Our team had a bad wrap on one dive and Doc Johnson and I ended up in a hellacious whirly. I was orbiting him like a rag doll. He yelled to me "what do you want to do?" Hell, I had been trying to cutaway for awhile. He thought I was unconscious, so he deployed his tersh (I wasn't wearing mine). I skipped over the deploying bag and bridle on several orbits before finally getting a hold of the cutaway handle. (We have footage from the ground of the wrap and cutaway with me spinning out of frame on my back as Doc's tersh opens). I flipped over as soon as I could and dumped my Featherlite. Doc floated down under the tersh for a short time and then cut the attachment bridle with a knife. He dumped his reserve after that.

I still have my tersh in my closet. I don't recommend them.

Post it if you can please :)
OK, I'll see if I can't dig it out. Remember it's black and white, from the ground, and probably 3rd generation video. Mike Lewis had a pretty good copy at one time.

Why? :o

They add weight, can block your vision below, and the ones we jumped in the old days could not be cutaway (they were hang glider reserves). I'm sure newer models have addressed these issues, but I came to the conclusion many years ago that two parachutes is enough.

As promised, here is the footage of the 1982 tersh deployment. Like I said, it's 3rd or 4th generation video shot from the ground.

If you think thats fun to watch then you may enjoy the second video. On this dive one of my teammates hits me hard from behind collapsing my canopy. it causes a wicked spin from which I cannot recover. Once again, my trusty Featherlite saves the day.

Disclaimer: Kids don't try this at home.

Great video of the tersh! Never seen one in action before.
The other video brought back some bad-old-days memories. Man, those old canopies just couldn't take the same kind of abuse as the new ones.
Cheers
Andre

The video of the tersh deployment was shot in 1982. The footage in the second video was shot in 1997. The Lightning I cutaway in '97 is the same one I used on the 70-way last year.

Hi Russ
Thanks for that.
My rotations in recent times have been on Tri's & Rubis' with AR7's and Matrixs before that. I haven't seen a canopy take-out and a spin like that since doing rotes on Cruiselites in the late 80's.
I haven't jumped a Lightning (too expensive for South Africans). I know they're great for bi-di formations, especially the big ones. Don't they like rotations and the sometimes inevitable smash-and-grab?
Cheers
A

Hi Andre,

I'm not sure if one canopy is more vulnerable than another to a hard line dock. Some of the folks who understand the dynamics of the canopies used for CRW may be able to provide some input. Personally, the AR-7 was my favorite canopy for rots.
